morning my friends, bugger, bugger.enjoying the freelander k series hands on ownership, but now the clutch is slipping and i dont have the dosh to let garage do it....so i think i am going to change clutch myself, did the head gasket a while back(easy) and as im mechanically minded i thought i would save myself a few bob and do a d.i.y. job firstly before i go ahead could it be anything else before i start?reading through past threadss it looks to be a pain working under car but i dont want to take motor out.do i need to replace slave and master cyls?could it be these rather than shagged clutch? these things always happen when moneys tight! cheers mark

The hydraulics wont cause the clutch to slip, unless they are leaking onto the friction plate (not something I've heard of before), they would stop the clutch from releasing.

Working under the car is a pain, but doable, take a look at Hippo Ramps TM Hippo ;) which make it alot easier, could also be worth youur while investing a few quid in a creeper board to lay on and move around under the thing, they make life easier again.

Best of luck with it, it's not difficult from what I've seen in the manual and looked at under the car, but will probably be time consuming, hence the big bill from the garage.

thanks for replying,i guess i was just looking for a bit of support before i get dirty, garage quoted me £400 so will look for some ramps and get geared up before i start, thanks mark

No worries, two things you are guaranteed of on here is support, and **** taking, not necessarily always in that order mind you ;) :)

When you cost up the parts make sure you inlcude the cylinder that is inside the gear box, they have been known to fail, and taking the box back off in 6 months to fix it will be rather annoying, even if you do know what you're doing by then :)

If you have the time and the inclination take photos and write it up as a how to, you could be famous :D

The photos will also be invaluable when it comes to putting the thing back together.

Your master and slave are one part. Both external to the gearbox.

Working under the car is a pain, but if you dont rush it, its a very easy job on the K series. Its more like a conventional car than a 4x4 in terms of gearbox removal. If you've ever removed a gearbox on a car , its the same.

If your going to try and do it with the IRD in, remember there is a bolt down the back of the engine to remove that sits between the ird and engine block.
