Sometime ago I bought a 1.8 freelander - had it 2 days and the HG went.

Got a full refund from garage.

Now you may think im stupid but I am currently looking for another - this time an oil burner.

It will be our second car so dont want to spend a lot - the question is ......

are the XE Di's ok, anything specific that goes wrong or to look for

or

Should I try to save a bit more and buy a high (er) mileage TD4

Looking through the trader, the TD4 is significantly more expensive - is it that much better ???

cheers

The TD4 is certainly more powerful and probably more technically refined. But the 2.0L is a noisy reliable old plodder with a pretty good reputation.

The TD4 is a significantly better engine. The L-series feels bombproof and reliable but not exciting. It's an old unit, really.

The TD4 is the same engine as in the BMW 3 Series.

Have a test drive in both and see if you are happy with the L-series after driving a TD4.

Cheers

Tinytdi and I are both running 150k miles covered Xedi's, both having had nowt major. Horses for courses, yep the TD4 is a newer lump, but has a fair few niggles. The older lump is a lump, but it gets you there. Having said that, get a bad one of either and you're up the creek:p

I agree wiv cashy . . . .both diesels are good, both run even better wiv a go faster gismo's fitted, the td4 is more refined ,but the older ones have now clocked high milage un still going well, the issues wiv td4 well documented in here. . . .:)
