Being of the side of the aesthetic rather than mechanical appeal of landys, I need advice.

My freelancer has a two things to sort out- 1) clutch issue. Cannot get her into gear unless a pump the clutch and push HARD. Been told this is a master/slave cylinder.....what do you think? If so, if it is that, what kinda time/cost would a garage charge?

Secondly, very very very sluggish up hills and over 50 mph...... Again, any advice about what this could be and the likely costs would really help.

Thanks gents.

The clutch issue is your master cylinder and is a costly job as it is inside the bell housing so it's a gear box out and replace.
If it has leaked over the clutch plate then a new clutch and maybe fly wheel and as its dual mass flywheel well say no more.
I know this as it happened to mine. So had the whole lot replace with a heavy duty single plate fly wheel. Clutch. Thrust bearing conversion kit. £766
Is this petrol or diesel. What's the year of it.

What engine do you have? Big difference in the amount of work that needs doing if you have the TD4, gearbox needs to be removed to change the cylinder. I think the L series and K series are the same and can be done quite easy. I don't know about the V6.

Really need to know what engine you have before anyone can make a guess to the lack of power.

Go and search the forums and put in "rare beast". You will see my work vehicle. A v8 modified monster that shifts around oak trees all day ;).

Being a lumberjack, I kinda like to put my alpha maleness to one side sometimes and get the effeminate gayness going....the birds like it ;)

But what engine do you have in the freelander?

Is it for certain that its the master/slave???? Basically it's nigh impossible to get into gear unless I pump up and down on the clutch...... At 120k on the clock, £700 is verging pump and dump.......

Mine went the same at 140.000 miles no clutch at all. Needed to keep pressing peddle but the air is getting in to the cylinder with the fluid.

Oh fear, not a good prognosis........d day for the gay ;)

It's a good looker too.....Norway blue, leather, 3 door though ;(. New baby too ;(. Ooooops

What would you guys do? 120k, good bod, 2002, What's it worth?

Get it done and fixed. I did and I go green laneing and on pay and play days all over the place. It's a great car. Good on fuel and great if we have summer with back off. Mine is the gold ES model. All leather heated seats air con the works.

Trouble is its the 120k.......I'll need a new car within a year or two and resale wise it may not pay. Even if I was to keep her long term, a 120k engine is nearing the end.....

It's a BMW td4 engine. It's virtually bullet proof not like the land rover engine they first put in them. If your just using it on toad you will double that millage and more with proper service oil changes.
Mine has been used off road every weekend since feb this year and I think it's a great off roader and puts some discos to shame.
The clutch is the major expense once that's done no problem. Last you another 10 years. ;)

The TD4 master cylinder is on the bulkhead and can be changed independently of the slave which is inside the bell housing.

If the op's problem is the master cylinder then this is not too expensive to change and can be bled.
