Hi all,

I have a 1999 2.0DL station wagon, had it from new. Heater used to be fine. In the last couple of years it has only started throwing out any heat after about 30 mins driving, even then not that much! Engine temp indicator is normal as it always has been.

last year I tried the modification to re-route the piping as described on and put everything effectively in series as described in this forum. It improved a little but it only seems to be effective when the weather is relatively mild. When it's really cold like this weekend is forecast to be it will again be useless.

I changed the thermostat from the standard fitting when it broke (another common problem) and replaced it one from ebay that comes complete with the plastic housing for the pipework connections. So now its a stadard metal type T/stat (can't remember what temperature it is though).

So is my problem that the T/stat is opening too soon (but engine temp is fine) or maybe a blocked heater matrix? I've bled the system countless times so I don't have any airlocks.

Any ideas/comments would be appreciated.

Does it chuck out cold air or no air at all ? Also does the temperature gauge stay at cold for a couple of minutes after starting them rise quickly to normal temperature ?
If the pollen filter is blocked it chucks out no/hardly any air.
the heater control moves a flap in the matrix called a 'blend flap.' This controls the heat by diverting the air over the matrix. Check the cable is moving the control arm, and hasn't become detatched.

Agree entirely with previous comments but would add that after nine years the matrix could do with a flush. Downside is that flushing the matrix can sometimes promote leakage. Good luck. D..
