Question Common faults on a Freelander 2?

I'm looking to buy a used Freelander 2, something in the region of a 57 plate, 40k on the clock, a TD4 manual.

Any gotchas I should look out for? I've been told to avoid the 06/07 models due to high rates of steering rack and diesel pump failures. Does that ring true with what any of you guys have seen? I've read about the steering rack problems, is there any preventative maintenance that could be done or is it just a case of wait for it to fail and pay for a new one?

Cheers
Tom

Make sure you dont get a judder on hard acceleration, as signs of a worn clutch/dual mass.

Make sure when turning the steering and blipping the throttle, you dont get a whiney noise consistent with vehicle revs. As you said, steering rack and reservoir would require replacement.

Drive it at motorway speeds and listen for a whine from the rear differential.

Check to see if there are signs of a rear main / golf club seals leaking from bottom of bellhousing.

Check fuel guage is working correctly.

Its all i can think of to be honest, the FL2 is pretty reliable in Land Rover terms.

Thanks Vissie, that's really helpful.

I'm driving a Honda Civic at the moment so I'm guessing almost anything I change to quite as reliable

The steering rack seems to be the only thing that fails consistently, I'll get a price for a replacement upfront so it doesn't come as too much of a shock if/when it does go. Prepared for failure!
