Changing TD4 fuel filter (later type)

Yes, I realised that the spring clip could be a problem: I removed that, and also the earth tag - but still could not shift the filter. In the end I drilled out the rivets holding one of the 3 vibration-mounting feet, which meant I could lift out the plastic cowl which holds the pump and filter, and easily drive the filter out using a tube spanner and a mallet. Curious to see that the fuel flow is: tank -> sedimentor -> pump -> filter -> engine, i.e. the pump is not protected from jamming if there is grit in the fuel?

Still waiting for the new filter to arrive by so-called "first class post"!

Another question: having drained the sedimentor (nothing in it but clean diesel as far as I could see) will I need to somehow prime the system? Or will the pump be able to suck air through the pipes until the fuel arrives? Thanks!

When you reassemble everything make sure the push on connections are all the way on because a couple of people have experienced them coming apart after a few miles. Also important to note the direction of flow on the filter. The system will self prime, when you turn on the ignition you'll hear the pump working to refill the system, when it cuts out check for leaks then start up.

I can vouch that this is indeed a pig of a job, and I would also like to be part of the firing squad for the aforementioned LR design engineer who came up with the concept of putting a serviceable item in such a maintenance-unsympathetic location.

Having finally given up on maintaining a dealer FSH for my 80K mile '02 Freelander ES, I finally got the bloody filter out of its sleeve only snapping the earth tag. I note with some dismay that the existing filter is stamped with the same year and month of manufacture as the rest of the vehicle!

Whilst this may be a coincidence, I'm more inclined to believe that neither of the 2 previous services requiring the fuel filter to be changed ever bothered to do it :( It all looked very untouched since the factory.

There's a lot to be said for secret marking of components and/or being provided with the removed parts. Lesson learned.

Hi Guys
I changed fuel filter today and found the earth tag going to the filter was broke. What is this earth for. Pump and car seem to be fine even though I have not connected the earth back up ??

Hi
03 plate and on with the td4 the fuel pump is in the rhr wheel arch.Turn ignition on and leg to the wheel arch you will hear it prime up.

Just had an experience i thought i'd share regarding the filter in question..

I broke down yesterday nr Ullapool en route to Durness on Holiday; AA sent tow truck who had no option but to relay on a flat bed trailer hame to Hamilton.

i set about the removal of the filter assembly taking firstly the wheel off, then the inner wing arch cover. The bolts holding the assembly came off fine ( not sticking ) and i removed the unit as a whole to clean it and refit a new filter.

The filter took a wee while to remove but when i did i noticed it was stamped June 2002! I bought the car 2 years ago with a full service record so someone hasn't been changing it! the car has now covered 85000 and was due to get a new filter next month anyway. i also saw dirt in the sedimentor and i drained the whole thing of fuel over rags, quite a mess! The earth has corroded too; i made a new one using the earth from and old light switch which i put in the same place as the old corroded one.

2 hrs later the reversal of the removal and the car started 2nd turn of the key!

The fuel filter should be changed every 60,000 miles according to LR, just changed mine a few weeks ago so should be ok for another 10 years, lol

Thats a good point made above about the earth tag - where does it connect to? Mine was hanging loose when I changed the filter with no obvious place to fit it - works fine without it though!

Being my first post I'm running the risk of offending many but here goes; Having read this thread it would seem that you are all afraid of simple mundain jobs?

My 53 plate freelander (60k) has been suffering an intermediate loss of power and today it just refused to start at all. I was heading in the direction of the fuel pump / filter anyway but just popped over to see if the freelander had a history in this particular area.

As an ex-Jaguar engineer i'm used to daft design ideas so in this respect i know no fear when it comes to these things:croc:unlike some  A thing that was made can be repaired, c'mon it's only a landie, how hard can it be?

Ok, this earth wire issue that some of you are wondering about. An educated guess would suggest that it may well be there to discharge surplus build up of static electricity to prevent damage to the expensive items further down the line. The static would be generated by the fuel as it journies through the rubber / plastic components of the pump & filter. I would probably not ignore this missing lead and re-connect the earth before having to replace an expensive set of injectors  after all, it's only a teeny weeny little wire.

Anywho, its off to the filter shop tomorrow and then on Saturday i will show the little Landie who's the BOSS
:fighting2: No mercy!

All that those that have gone before with this filter thing and are mumbling along the lines of, jumped up..., what does he know, wait until you...

I have but one thing to say, I hope that my theory on the earth connector proves to be true and a filter will never defeat me, i'm much more stubborn than a landrover could ever be :D

So far... Local auto-parts supplier has no idea what filter I need, no surprise there

Local Landy dealer (who refuse to cross reference any more parts for said auto-parts dealer) have genuine filter in stock and cheaper than said auto-parts dealer
once again, no surprise there...
more to follow and I'll get some piccies for future reference to all :praise:

Aint yer done it yet smarty pants :D :D :D :D

Hi,
Can anyone help me please I am looking for a diagram of the fuel pump that goes in to the tank on a Td4 51 plate Freelander. I need to know if there is a gasket missing and a covering for the overflow? Thanks

Aint yer done it yet smarty pants :D :D :D :D

FYI, my pants don't smart at all and the whole deal took less than 20 minutes;

I was trying to be helpful to other members that just don't seem to have grasped the plot yet despite their years on this forum, you're supposed to be giving help to those that haven't got a clue!

No doubt you'll ban me for the above comment and that's not your loss, it's the newbie members loss as they are the ones who need the help like 'Nicjay'

I hope that the image works for you, at least I could be bothered ;)
