Hi all I am new to Freelander stuff and wanted some advice on buying one. I have been to look at one it's a 02 done 113000 miles seems to drive good but for one problem . The clutch pedal engages about 10mm from the floor . Is this an easy fix ? it's £2000 still got steel wheels and never towed. hope you can help.

Good choice ;)

Check fluid levels
Clutch slave has problems (fixing circlip breaks if I remember) I think clutch has to be replaced complete (master and slave).
First jobbies I would recomend after clutch and a full service is to replace the turbo hoses (silicone) as they are probe to splitting and change the breather filter to a BMW one.

Before yu get it, check vcu & props are in place and check vcu works on wet grass.

Thank's for that Mad Hat Man.
The props and vcu are in place it had a new bearing fitted a week ago on the prop.

Why was only one VCU bearing changed? The other one will fail soon, they are best changed in pairs. It not as if they are expensive.

I don't know if it's one or two he had done? he just said that there was a noise from the prop and he had it done it came form a main dealer as a part exchange.

My td4 has 212,000 miles on but has had verious issues along the way. Mostly simple but annoying things.

Main issues are the well documented filters, sensors and actulators that get full of crud.

I don't think that the price is bad, used land rovers seem to be holding there money the last few years.

The clutch may just need bleeding. It's a bit of a swine to do due to the location of the bleed nipple (on top of the gearbox/bellhousing) and the fluid reservoir being a bit hard to access too (on the bulkhead behind the LH side of the engine). It's a job best done with two people.

As MHM sez, the slave cylinder is a pretty weak component. It's the usual culprit that fails and sucks air in. You may see hydraulic fluid leaking out underneath if it has failed. Definitely replace the master cylinder as well if the slave is deemed faulty as one seems to induce failure in the other.

Is it an easy fix? Hmmm, no. To do the slave you need to take the rear prop off, the front driveshafts out, the front subframe off and the IRD too. THEN you can get the gearbox off as the slave is in the bell housing. And while you've gone to all that trouble, replace the clutch plates! The release bearing is part of the same unit as the slave cylinder. It's a pretty long job, so if it needs to be done in a garage prepare for quite a bill :(

Hope that helps.

As above i did mine 3 weeks ago, as it was getting really hard to find 1st and reverse bleed it, (it is a swine to do) but the old girl has been bob on since :) only time will tell if it goes again and to see if the problem needs investigating further.

Also changed the air filter and she runs a hell of a lot better, only had it since october and it was aparently serviced before i bought it, my arse that air filter had been in for years, so dont believe everything the seller tells you.
