PS thought the Cooper S had the 1275 lump in and the Cooper 1100.

As Singvogel said, the Coopers did come in different guises, I didn't even realise it was a Cooper S until after I sold it in '86 to a grinning enthusiast for what I thought was a good price, but he got himself a bargain, apparently. :(
 
I've been checking with my BMW factory pals in Steyr Austria where they build the engines. My wife's cousin works in the assembly hall.

Yes there is a known problem with the pcv - mainly on larger engines that are used for very short journeys in extreme cold climates.

Apparently the condensation that can form in the pcv combines with the oil to form an emulsion (the yellow coloured gunk that can also show up on the oil filler cap) which can actually freeze and block the pcv causing the pressure that we know about as well as seriously damaging the turbo.

BMW are rumoured to be developing a heated breather for extreme cold conditions.

Nothing to worry about for those who are aware of the problem.

If you make repeated short journeys in sub-zero temperatures you just need to check for the 'mayonnaise' forming and change your oil accordingly.

Nothing would make me go back to fitting the old 'loo-roll' filter.
The freezing problem only affected engines where the PCV was fitted remotely, it gained no heat from the engine as it warmed up, so the valve stayed frozen shut.
BMW fitted insulation to the connecting pipes and a heated jacket to the PCV, info got from a Yank BMW forum ages ago.
 
I'm picking-up an '05 plate TD4 Sport on Saturday and am just researching a few common faults, beforehand.

I talked to BMW in Germany today and that guy asked me for the number only. After I asked for the case he asked which car, so FL wasn't a good answer :) but when I told him for a common rail diesel td4 he found the case w/o number. So shouldn't be a prob. Here is 49€ case plus separator. Just separator 26.04€.

I was looking for the case today to change the filter these days but couldn't locate it. As I couldn't find that filter to be changed in the Haynes man. (At least not under the names used here) I have no clue where it is. Would anyone have a pic or description maybe?

It sits under a few bits of plastic on top of the engine
 
Sorry, but I think I need to ask one more. I called to the local BMW dealer and gave him the number from the first page 11 12.... He ordered and when I got there and saw that piece I was completely not sure if it was the right one. It looked kind of the right one on the pic attached and I thought it should look more like the one on the left. He said maybe it'd be the wrong number and the filter would end 164. Could anyone please confirm which it is, cause that parts guy unfortunately had not really a clue and I am not really a techi myself ;).

looks to be ok. i.e. going by memory ..
i've a pic of it somewhere .. will look for it ..

if it's the right one .. it'll slot right into place ..
although some need to file .. or cut .. a small slot in the side ..
( be obvious once you try 'n fit it into place )
 
Thanks for the pic hd3. I think now it makes sense as anyone said install it and forget it and I was thinking that a 'normal' filter would still need change.
 
Ok still couldn't locate it on top of the engine. Took a pic and think it's the bit under all that cover foam. It's the only one looking like the pics you uploaded. Ami right with that?

I have a spare one as I was sent two (god knows why) its yours for a fiver plus postage if you are still after one, easy to fit and is definitely a fit and forget job. It was the first job i did after buying my Hippo TD4.
