Bigger tyres for a 2003 TD4 Freelander

2003 TD4 Freelander, looking at changing tyres to offroad tyres, so want that little bit more clearance and traction, what is the largest tyre size can be fitted on standard suspension, currently is 215 65 16.

All help appreciated.

I've changed to 205/80/16 Kumho KL78 A/T. Allmost an inch more clearence, compared to standard. Mine is a '99 L-series. No problems, and the speedo is right on now. Know of some other guys with bigger tyres, maybe they will join in...

A/T tyres are fine for off-roading

Some people like BF Goodrich A/T tyres.

Using mud terrains is possible though the more knobbly the tyres, the less the 4wd (VCU) will work because the front wheels won't spin then you won't get the 4wd.

I have noticed that you can feel 4wd cut in when off-road. Quite often the traction control light will flash just before.

The Freelander works very well in mud and wet grass, much to the surprise of those who think they drive 'real 4x4 trucks

My BFG a/t have never given me any troubles with grip and I very rarely see the t/c light come on. I wouldn't want proper MUDs unless I was having a sole off-road Freelander.

I have always found freelanders are quite sensitive to tyre noise, don't know why

MTs are more likely to put strain on the admittedly weaker drivetrain components on a Freelander.

I've had Defenders, Discoveries and Freelanders and have offroaded all over UK and mainland Europe. ATs are what you want on a Freelander

Conti Cross Contact AT are snowflake rated in some sizes
