Hi guys my 01 td4 auto is slipping in 4th and 5th gears all the rest
are smooth would this be just an oil change needed or am i looking at a new box

Hi, I've got a Freedlander TD4 2002 Same thing started happening however, Gears only slip under acceleration, If you are really gentle with the Accelerator pedal in fourth and fifth it doesn't slip. When I say slip I mean if you accelerate it will ride up to the red and but only once then it will find the gear. Tbh I drive in sport and do all my accelerating in 3rd, and cruise in 4/5th. I'm not going to buy a new box or have it stripped down, just saving up for the same spec freelander that's been we'll looked after. And sell this for spares, (I think!)

I did look into transmission oil change but was told if its not leaking there's no point changing it?

Had it looked at by a landy specialist. Diagnostic read 4/5th selector. Btw it doesn't select 5th in auto but it does when you bypass in sport.

Anyone reckon a transmission oil Change would help? As a rule I buy just above scrap value and sell when it fails the mot

I honestly don't mean that to sound arrogant, I just can't afford mechanics rates, and don't know any decent guys that do mates rates.

Would appreciate any comments.

Regards bvc.

you've been sadly misinformed about the fluid change. service interval for the fluid is 60k, many report better changing etc after fluid swap.

when engine is cold, it will hold gears longer than normal.

also, some degree of slip is normal when accelerating, esp in 4th / 5th as the torque convertor doesn't lock up straight away.

however, if it is excessive, then maybe consider a fluid change. easy enough to do yourself, just have a search to make sure you undo the right plug on the gearbox or it will have to come out to have the brake band refitted.

It can also be down to a cracked piston allowing the clutch locking force to drop, the parts are about £300 inc the reassembly of the piston assy , and you can rebuild it by lowering the power unit and accessing under the n/s wheel arch . HTSH

Hi guys, just an update, spoke to some guys who sound very knowledgable, danes of Norwich transmission specialists. Said he would bet his left testicle it's a cracked piston, and as long as reverse has no loss drive he can sort it for 450 quid all in. (Oil and vat) now I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place, coz I've bought the wife another motor and the td4 is sitting on the drive, got offered 700 quid from a landy mechanic, but the thought of having her sorted, is tempting, a cracking spare, for the winter.

The wife is haring around in a saab 9-3 and loving it! She wants the landy gone, but I can't say goodbye. She's never let me down in 2 years. ( landy not the wife)

What do you reckon she's worth as she is? And would you fix her up? Not sure it's worth fixing and selling, as there's a few issues,

1. Drivers window not working
2. Sunroof only half opens
3. Scrape above rear bumper
4. Rear door hinges broken
5 a tennis ball size paint damage from pressure washer.
6. Air con busted, lr couldn't find the fault, re gassed and disconnected pump For the last owner.

Sounds a lot but I still love her, started every morning through the winter. - 8 some mornings!

Any suggestions?

Cheers brad.

whats your location ? thats a little bit of a high price , but maybe allowing for something unexpected.
but it looks abit like you are not maintaining it much anyhow , so probably best that you let it go , as the repair could end up costing more JMHO

It may be worth more fixed. Peeps sell them as spares or repair on e bay and I've seen td4's go for over £1k with a broke'd auto gearbox. just list the spec and the fault.

Thanks for your comments, I'm in Ipswich btw, I think it may be sensible to sell, just a shame to let her go, don't have half the confidence in the saab as I have in th fr. I reckon she's worth a grand. 125k on the clock. Nice motor if you can fix DIY.

Cheers brad.

Btw reckon its worth listing on here?
