So here we go please can anybody help, broke down a week ago driving along and the crank pulley bolt not only worked loose but the keyway [woodruff] key broke away, so moving on:mad: replacement head, new gasket set ect all fitted up and had all timing checked twice i went to start and all i got was a whirring sound, no compression [well sounds like that] my thought is im getting no oil pressure so valves arnt working properly  or oil pump not working at all? any help would be really great? i have heard that you can tow start these as after a strip down its hard to get up the oil pressure??? help please thanks in advance:tea:

I could tell you, but as I don't know who you are, as you have not introduced yourself in a 1st post, first, the others would kill me, sorry cant take that chance

I suspect the valve timing is out. Low oil pressure won't stop a healthy engine running or give no compression.

i thought they can only go on one way?? hmmm can i just 180 deg turn the cams so they are in effect upside down [exhaust and inlet will be :/] will this work? thanks for reply's folks :)

The cam gears have 2 slots in them if you put the the pin in the wrong slot it will turn over but not start. Have a browse through the forum there is a diagram/picture not too far back that shows the correct placement.

thanks for response ill get it sorted tomorrow and update the thread if my little freelander springs into life, if all else fails ill burn it and get a disco :)

sorry no intention of selling my project:D have looked up correct way to put cams on and changed them round now timing is 100% correct however its still not starting:mad: i am deffo getting a spark deffo getting fuel have charged the batt up so have electricity it spins over and cough's alot but will not fire up i do get a sound like the starter is retracting every so often when i attempt to start:frusty: really at a loss now, any ideas better than mine and do not include setting fire to it[that's plan b] would be great:confused:

that was one of my previous posts

have seen post and followed all data and instructions regarding cam placement both are on the correct pin, inlet is on the [in] side and exhaust is on the [ex] side and cam timing is set with a straight edge as exhaust inlet exhaust inlet, bottom crank is set at proper marks [two dots and horizontal line on oil pump housing] hence why i am now at a loss as i have done it all properly ???????

Not my specialist subject but is it possible you've bent the valves if you tried starting it with valve timing so far out, that might be whats making the noise not the starter motor

This^^^^ The K series valves bend if the timing is 180° out. It can't sound correct when cranked over.

all sorted now thank fuxk, it was starter motor knocking back as the batt was poo, also crank was all but a ant's nut out of alignment so got it spot on and hey presto it started first turn of the key, thank you to all for the really useful advice regarding my cams as this was a big part of it not running first time. now its running all i have to do is sort the rear window/door out as thats just stopped working:mad: and deal with the oil leek i have just spotted:doh:
