Hi,

Had my freelander for about a year now, and at some point over the last 6 months the rear speakers stopped working and I think the amp and sub as well. Every now and then the sub kicks in, works for afew seconds then goes off again.

I'm no stereo expert, but I undid all the screw under the panel that lifts up in my boot and I checked the sub, it looked to be ok and all the wiring was fine, so I can't see any obvious problems.

It's the Karmin stereo with sat nav and a 6 cd changer under the drivers seat. The head unit works fine, I'm assuming either my amp is dead or I have some dodgy wiring somewhere.

I called a stereo specialist local to me, he said my system is optical wiring or something and would be very expensive to replace or fix, and said for him to look at it would be £60 and that's without even knowing if he can fix it or not!

Is there any obvious things that I can check? Any advice at all would be great.

Thank you.

figure out what are the speaker connections on the amp ..
i.e. which are positive .. which are negative .. they are usualy colour coded ..
and or have a ( + ) and ( - ) marked on them ..

take a multimeter .. set it to read ohms ..

disconnect the speaker leads from the amp ..

connect to multimeter leads to the respective plus / minus .. positive / negative .. of the speaker wires ..
and if the wiring to the speaker .. and the speaker internal wiring .. are all ok ..
you'll hear a 'click' noise from the speaker as the multimeter leads are 'touched'
to the speaker leads ..

that's one way of figuring if the wiring to the speakers is ok ..

~~~~~
if the speaker wiring be ok ..
that leaves the speaker to amp connection itself ..
and the connections from the head unit to the amp
i.e. if the head unit controls .. front to rear balance ..
then the connections from head unit to amp must have *separate wiring to the amp for that purpose ..
*am guessing at that .. as i've never taken an in-car unit to pieces ..
or looked at wiring diagrams for such ..
( just messed a lot with studio music gear of all kinds :)
i have said this before on here the wires in the doors are prone to coroding so take them off and give them a clean that might do the trick if not you need new door wiring , it is ever since LR had the wiring made in china insted of good old britain.
It's the Karmin stereo
oh great ..
searchin' 'karmin in car stereo' .. brings up nowt except for some pop group
any idea where my amp will be?
thought yours were under the seat for some reason ..
misread yours 'n confused it with another post/thread ..
either the amp is combined with the radio thing ..
or it's separate .. hiding somewhere .. under a seat .. in the console ..
'ell i can't even get 'make' info on the standard radio/cd unit in my '06 hippo ..
just sais landrover on it .. ppl a LR dealerships can't tell me either ..
( 'n mine don't have no sub either .. )
what teddywood1 said is likely to be the case .. corroded wiring in the doors ..
if it's the rear speakers of a 5 door ..
more likely to be dodgy speaker wiring somewhere .. than anything else ..
it's not too difficult to remove the interior door trim if needed ..
just a pain if one hates plastic construction kits .. :)
~~~~~~~~~

if you know someone .. friend/aquaintance .. who's good with house stereos ..
they should be able to help .. .. hi-fi's / car stereos have the same Basic set-up .. more or less ..

To be honest it probably is Harman Kardon, Im being dumb coz I haven't checked what it was first lol god knows what I got Karmin from!
:rolleyes:

Did you solve the speaker problem ? If the sound from the 6" speaker is weak and only high fequency it's my bet is that the speaker cone is jammed which is caused by the magnet moving and jamming the speech coil (magnet to basket adhesive failure)

Hi...new to landyzone & having grief with my 53 plate 5 door Sport Premium Harman Kardon system. ( non sat nav model )

The tweeters in the front doors & the sub in the boot have Harman stamped on them but can't find the amp....nothing under the front seats.

Seem to have a similar problem to the one listed where only the left speakers seem to work. The sub is shot & distorts the base.

Any help with the location of the amp & a suggestion to replace the 6 inch sub in the boot most welcome

defo should be bolted under the front passengers seat if not there then it has walked and as said check the wiring to the speaks try cleaning the end contact
