Freelander 2004 td4 ES
Hi Everyone.
I'm new to this site - hoping I can get some good advice.
I bought a 2004 td4 ES freelander in Sep 14. I test drove it and fell in love with it and bought it without giving it a really good check. It has 105K and almost a full SH.
It came from Scotland and has been used off road etc.
I have since had it fully serviced and mechanic confirms engine is really good. It is however due an MOT in about a week and mechanic said it has the following issues:

1. slight oil leak from rear diff (mechanic says it is full however)
2. knocking noise from rear left wheel when driving - also inside of tyre is worn (otherwise really good tread on rest of tyre)
3. All underside has surface corrosion and it probably needs sealing
4. Front Brake hoses are corroded - although brakes have new discs and pads on front.

I am more concerned at the moment about the rear wheel. Looking on the forum - could it be bearings, bushes, seals etc or is it more likely to be related to the rear diff?
Hoping you guys can give me some advice and it wont cost too much to get sorted.
I live in Manchester.

Cheers

I would check all 4 corners to make sure all tyres are the same make/model and have same pressure. If 1 or 2 are different or under/over pressure you will be getting wind up in the transmission and that may be the cause of both the noise and wear on the tyre - and it may not be that tyre that's causing the wind up.

If the tyres look OK, I'd get the geometry of that corner checked out in case something's been bent when it was off-roaded.

If you can't track down the noise - do a "cracked chassis" search on here - it may be that.

A 4 wheel laser alignment check is a good idea if the tyre is wearing unevenly.

I had mine done a year ago when I had my lift kit fitted, but it was out again after not very much off-roading a year later, so it is worth doing. Should cost £80-£100.

Hi All.
Had MOT test today. Passed after only needing a headlight clip as one was broken and the beam was misaligned. :)
Brake hoses are rusty but no urgent fix required.
I asked about the rear wheel n/s and uneven tyre wear and the mechanic reckoned they couldnt find anything untoward. It just needs a new tyre.

I am running Pirelli Scorpions ice and snow 215/65/R16 on the back and Continental Cross Contact winter 215/65/R16 on the back.

Just wondering whether to treat myself to some new ones all round. Any recommendations for good ones that wont break the bank?

Best to have 4 tyres the same size all round to save your transmission from destroying itself.

I have General Grabber AT for summer use and Vrededestein Wintrack 4 Xtreme for winter use. I buy 5 tyres at a time. Well maybe 4 next time round if I stick with the same.

Hi All. Put 4 x brand new Bridgestone Dueler HP 215/65/r16son today at £75 a corner. Done by a one man back street tyre place I've been going to for years.
Good deal and the good news is the droning / knocking noise from the rear passenger wheel seems to have gone straight away.:clap2:

Now I need to get new wheel nuts for 4 wheels as the ones on there are rusty as fu*k and corners wearing off.
