its an easy job to replace reverse band and would take half hour ,i do them for £260 including remove refit auto box

:) No what I was wondering was are you a garage business, there can't be much/any profit to be made at that price after covering wages and overheads? While £800 might be high your way down the other end of the spectrum, I can't imagine many businesses being able to match such prices and survive.

Whats yer garages hourly rate then? Servicing and repair are sometimes different rates.

Shame you weren't around when I had my mishap James, back in Oct 2010. At the time I had 3 options. Local LR dealer £2600, well enough said, local well known LR independant, who were willing to remove box, take it to auto specialist, then re-fit, 3 days without car, £1600 or the same auto specialist to do whole job at £800, 1 days work. They said they fully inspect all aspects of the box, replace any suspect bits, refill with the correct oil "by the book" fully road test in auto and steptronic for 40 miles and then give an unconditional 12 month guarantee.
30 years ago I had gearboxes out of MG Midgets, Triumph Spitfires, etc in the ol' mans garage for mates, knackered synchros, bust clutches etc, I'm past all that and dont have the space, time or facilities any more. I was well happy with the service I got and, to be honest, the price I paid.
I wont be undoing that bolt again, but if the box should go after the guarantee is out, I'll get you to give me a quote, lol.
Best regards!

Mistaking the band lock bolt for the level plug. Idiot, I know! Especially as I had read the bulletin, and knew that it was a common mistake! Ah well, we live and learn. There have been 3 identical incidents of doing a similar thing by mechanics at the HGV garage I work, with a particular AsTronic truck gearbox..........
I'll say no more except this is even more costly to put right!

i have a problem when i start the v6 freelander it will not go in reverse when i waiting for the engine to heat up for about 30 min it starts , as long as it is heat it will go in reverse the problem is only when you pack for a long time and it does cold then it will not go in reverse what could the problem be? what part is affected and what is the part number?

Difficult to say. It could be a sticking/dirty solenoid which works ok when hot, but not cold. But that's just a guess. Does it drive normally in all forward gears (all 5)? You could try changing the auto oil. There's a special method on here how to do it. Also make sure you find the correct filler/drain plug. If you remove the incorrect one you will loose reverse gear and need the auto taken apart to fix it. Make sure you use suitable auto oil.

Hi we had a new prop put on a 2002 TD4 3 months ago, had slight vibration not sure if it was the VCU, now crashing into gear between 2nd to 3rd and 3rd and 4th gears when changing up. Could it be transmission fluid or knackered VCU ?

Has someone done a service on it or is it possible whoever worked on it changed/checked the auto's oil level?
