16" tyre recommendation?

Hi All,

Just bought myself a Freelander, which will be used mainly as my winter car and for some light off road / green laning.

It has the standard 16" alloys on and badly needs a set of 4 new tyres (currently 215/65/16s). I'm a bit baffled with this, as I've only got experience with standard and high speed road tyres. I'd like to go for something a bit chunkier, but without compromising the road feel and noise levels too much.

Can anyone confirm whether I can go up a shade in size on the standard rims without encountering clearance issues? 225/70/16s seem to be a similar price to the stock tyres and would give a bit of lift, which appears to be a good choice, but will they start fouling, or get too bus like

Any recommendations for a good cheap green lane tyre that still performs OK on the road??

recently put a set of Grabber AT2 on mine 215/65/16 standard size, look good, corners well and not much noisier......not got em too wet yet.. scared me doors might fall orft

Cooper Discovery HT 205 70 gives a bit of lift maybe an inch and less road noise.

got michelin lattitude on mine, seemed to cope okay with green laning, as well as driving like a normal car tyre.

225/70-16" looks great ar FL. Also its no problems.

O P are your latitudes dual use, or mainly road pattern, my reason for asking ,i am looking to buy

General Grabber 215/70 R16 will fit. They give an extra bit of lift without messing with steering angles and are much better than standard road tyres when the going gets muddy. On tarmac they will slide earlier if you hammer it into corners compared to Michelin Syncro - but then you would expect some compromise.
I am biased as I have 5 (complete with wheels) sitting in the garage that were bought and used for a trip across the desert. They won't fit the new FL2, and the misses won't go through the desert again due to lack of adequate showers!

Cheers guys. Booked the car in for Friday and went for a set of cheapish 215/70/16 HT hybrid tyres in the end to see how they fit and feel.

Did i say 205 meant 215 eyes are getting old

I´m in need of a couple of tyres for the front of mine, but funds are a bit short at the moment. So...... anyone had any experience with any of the following:

Federal MS-357
GT Radial Champiro BXT
Marshal KH35
Maxxis MA-P1
Speedo Alpha

For Max ground clearance 205/80/16...Avon are reasonable price road biased AT

On this note guys, i too am running standard tyres at 215/65/16. would like to move slightly bigger but seem to struggle to find 225/70/16 its always 235/70/16 or 225/75/16.
dont want to mess too much with speedo as there lots of cameras around but feel 235 will prob rub i am guessing.
also does anyone notice a significant fuel consumption change on bigger tyres as with fuel prices on the rise and all .

dont really do off roading other than a wet field but i am sad and like white lettering

with bigger tyres speedo will read higher than actual speed

205 80 16 will increase your speedo by approx 10% ....... as this is factory calibrated at approx 10% under you end up with it fairly accurate..... same goes for mpg..... accurate mileage will allow you to work out accurate MPG not the mickey mouse figures that LR quote to sell motors
