sorry if this has been covered before. I have read all the threads about the problems with the rear wheel arch mounted fuel pump but none seem to describe what I have been experiencing.

I have had my Freelander for 2 years; about 18 months ago I noticed there was an intermitent ticking noise coming from the rear wheel arch (which I assume can only be the fuel pump). It varies somewhat in frequency..mostly ticks at a rate of once a second but will then speed up to 2-3 times a second for a little while, then back to once a second.

It's been doing this pretty much non stop for the last 18 months but sometimes I go a few days without hearing it (and it's loud enough that you always hear it when it's happening).

Sometimes I shut the engine off for a few seconds and restart it to see if it goes away. The ticking noise always goes away for about 3-4 minutes i I restart the engine but generally comes back (although sometimes not for 10-20 minutes).

One thing I have noticed recently is that when I restart the engine and thus dont hear the ticking noise, the re emergence of the ticking noise is almost always preceded by a strange howling/whistling noise coming from the near side of the engine compartment (sounds almost like someone blowing a single note on a harmonica). Once the howling noise goes away, the fuel pump ticking comes back.

I checked all the hoses to and from the turbo and tightenend the fittings, but this hasn't fixed either noise.

Spoke to a LR specialist locally and he suggested just to replace the fuel pump. Im a little reluctant as it's an expensive part and from other postings I gather not always a guarantee to get rid of the noise. Im certainly no expert, but fuel pumps seem to be pretty simple and either work or dont.

I havent noticed any lack of power or other symptons so I know I should probably leave well enough alone, but the ticking noise really is very annoying and always gives me the feeling that something is about to break!

any suggestions would be much appreciated

The LR "specialist" is not so special.
The noises are normal, the howling sound is the Fuel Burning Heater starting up
(use the 'forum search' to read similar posts for info)
and the ticking noise is coming from it's own diesel pump located under the right rear wheelarch. Stop worrying it's all working as it should...:)

keep the radio turned on ,:)

this may be the fuel burning heater starting up ,nothing to worry about , it only starts up in cold weather

thanks all for that...I suspect that must be it, although the ticking noise from the pump seems to happen in all temperatures, whereas the howling noise from the FBH now that I think about it is more recent phenomenon which would make sense with all the cold weather we are having.

I took it to the specialist anyway since he needs to replace windscreen washer pump and wouldn't you know it; no noises whatsoever! I had switched off the heating to make the noise more noticiable..ironic...he did suspect the FBH right away though..

I will probably try to disconnect the FBH as the ticking noise drives me crazy sometimes (and I dont like listening to the radio and my Johnny Cash CD's are in the other car)

OK, pull fuse 5 from engine bay fuse box, that will stop the FBH starting up. If the ticking noise also stops that will confirm it was from the small FBH fuel pump and not the engines fuel pump.

FBH fuel pumps are supposed to tick but it shouldn't be very loud. If it is really noisy perhaps it resting on the chassis and transmitting excess noise?

That was definitely it..Pulled fusefive and now all extraneous noises have stopped completely. The ticking was from the fuel pump resting on the chassis..Too difficult to fix this and as I dont need the FBH I have decided to dispense with it altogether...now have the blissful sounds of silence again to accompany my drive to work
