hi, i have a 200tdi that usally runs perfect until now, it seems to loose the turbo, misses slightly, and causes masses of white/blue smoke and it sounds like the bottom end has fallen out, this only last for a few minutes, when it clears it is fine again, until it decides to do it again when ever that might be. has anyone got any ideas. please help:confused:

no it starts fine everytime, it just does it randomley. would the vacuum unit that is run off the cam have anything to do with it, my brakes have gone hard, i've replaced the servo and master cylinder but they are still the same.

Have you checked all the vacuum pipes and breathers? Do the brakes improve temporarily when the smoking happens? If oil is causing a hose to become blocked it could eventually dump the oil somehow into the turbo which would result in the brakes working fine for a short period until the hose clogs up again, this would explain the randomness of the problem. However I'm not 100% sure if the 2 problems are related or if its even possible.

it could be just a build up of crap in the intercooler or it's pipes, have you ever taken them off and cleaned them?

yes thats the one:)

not sure if a build up a crap in the sedimenter would cause the prob you're having:confused: but it's defo worth cleaning out and only takes 10 mins. It can be found behind the o/s rear wheel inside the chassis and looks like this

don't try and take the plastic bung off the bottom it WILL break off, undo the bolt on the top of it (11mm ring spanner) and once fully undone tap it with a rubber mallet to get the whole unit off (have something underneath to catch all the crap/diesel coming out) then give it a good clean.

when you put it back on make sure the seal isn't twisted, job done.:D

I don't think this is your prob but it's best to start with the easy stuff first that I know about then if it's something more technical one of the boffins can come to your aid.:D

Have fun.

Only ever had a Defender so I'm not sure, but has the 200tdi Disco not got a water trap under the fuel filter then barmatt?

fuel filters are a sealed unit under the bonnet, they do have a valve on the bottom to let out crap but the sedimenter would have to be full of nasty stuff before it got to the filter.

So maybe bleed the filter a bit if you find the sedimenter totally full. personally I would just change the fuel filter they're cheap enough.

Cheers barmatt, when he said about a water trap at the back it made me think just cos thats where mine is.

I'd have to second changing the fuel filter especially if you don't know when it was last changed.

I still think it's more likely to be crap in the intercooler/hoses but op has gone quiet so don't know what's going on:confused:
