wiring problems

:doh:hi guys just put the engine back in my l reg 200 tdi al went well till the handbrake cable started to smoke found the earth strap had broke so put a new one on but the new prob is that when i rev the engine the battery light comes on iv checked alternator and its givin charge but the battery keeps goin flat do you think i have some wires wrong or could it be that iv burnt something out due to the earth strap
does anyone have any pics of the wiring on the back of the alternator and starter motor

How did u check the alternator for output voltage...
1. at the battery or direct on alternator contacts?
2. did u check it battery disconneted too?
3. did u use digital or classic voltmeter...i'm asking that cos the alternator has a diode pack on it to convert ac to dc .... if the diode pack is faulty it could just partially convert the ac and the outcome is a kind of half redresed "juice" which will not charge the battery but the voltmeter is showing it as dc.

handbrake smoke, mine did this, was the engine earth, have you fitted yours

thanks guys after checkin again i found the alternator was fooked and your right it was the earth strap iv now fitted two new ones and it now starts loads better thanks for all the info guys
