Will an aftermarket Alarm/Immobiliser clash with 300TDI's factory Alarm/Immobiliser?

Before fitting a Viper aftermarket alarm/immobiliser we realised that it might become a complete nightmare if it clashes with the existing alarm/immobiliser, so the exam questions are:

a) Is the factory-fitted system a decent level of protection against thieves or is it wise to fit a better/more modern system?
b) Does the existing system need to be disabled/bypassed in some way when the new one is installed (or can they co-exist happily)?

which appears to indicate that you can fit an aftermarket alarm if you connect it into the spider (or bypass the spider?)
