What model is this Disco?

Hi,

I've recently been given the opportunity to purchase this Disco. It's a 2001 model, which came from a fleet and is pretty low mileage (~43k), it's also a 2.5 manual. However, that's all I know, I think it's a special fleet order as I've never seen another so basic. It has steel wheels, tape deck, and no extras at all that I can see. Does anyone know what model/trim this would be listed as, and a rough idea on it's value?

Poverty spec TD5??

Well, I figured it would be a base/poverty, but do you know what Land Rover themselves actually called it? I'm afraid my own knowledge doesn't extend much further than Series'. Haha.

I think you'll find that it is a TD5 "E". Base spec Disco 2 diesel.


Value? It's a late 2001 bottom of the ladder spec so not in demand, but has low mileage - I'm guessing £3-3500

Agree - an "E" specification. The next one up, the "S" had front fogs and headlight washers.

IMHO, the lower-spec cars are better for long term ownership - no sunroofs to leak, no ACE to go wrong, and good old coil-sprung suspension.

That's like saying a 198X Polo is better than a 1972 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow.

Sure the Polo is easier to repair.
But **** the Polo anyway, I'll have the Silver Shadow anytime.

Hmm - OK I'll explain better. I have a GS. It is coil sprung. I've taken the ACE off because it's problematic. Disco sunroofs leak.

This "E" does not have sunroofs to leak, nor does it have ACE to give trouble. It has coils rather than SLS so no leaky airbags.

A lot of Disco owners remove ACE, mastic-close the sunroof to stop leaks, and replace SLS with coils.

In my book, the Disco obove has 3 less "goodies" to cause the problems he'll be on this forum looking for fixes for.

I like the simplicity of the lower spec models (of Discoveries...not a polo vs a silver shadow!)....

If only it had simpler hubs, then the "3 amigos" may be a thing of the past...that would really be fantastic!

Yep, sounds like a TD5 E which was the same as a commercial but with the 2nd row of seats and glass (obviously). New they were £21995 without metallic paint.

Not that far from an S spec in reality. Seem to remember something unusual about the rear seats (no arm rest or centre head rest perhaps), and I think the stowage bins instead of 6/7 seats were different to the normal 5 seaters (perhaps the bins were missing?).

Cheers for all the fast responses. One thing I think might be of note is that on the Discopedia, the 'E' is listed as having electric/heated mirrors. This has neither, in fact it doesnt even have mirror adjustment stalks!

Andrew - welcome to the forum, looking forwards to the postings as you find/fix/upgrade/modify!

The 2001MY does have SLS on the 7 seat model but it was an option on the 5 seater. Volumetic alarm, automatic gearbox and metallic/black pant was also an option and that's about it.

Andeh, do you have handbook with the Disco.
If i remember correctly when i had one of the first TD5 models in 1998, basic model, no sunroofs etc etc. the mirrors were electrically operated by the control switch on RHS of dash between wheel and door. The electric heating comes on to the mirrors by the heated rear window switch.Find someone local with similar year Td5, borrow their handbook and copy it,

Failing that PM the registration number or Chassis No. and i'll look it up for you

I've had a look through the handbook and it states that 'some vehicles may have manually operated mirrors'. But it doesn't elaborate any further.

Headlight washers yes, but no front fogs as standard on S.

it certainly looks a nice example, less to go wrong has got to be a plus.
what do you want leccy mirrors for you will never move em once they're right.
it actually looks quite nice in a simpler form.
saying that i do like my electric operated heated leather heated seats(not that ive used the heated bit since coming here)
