My 1997 300 Tdi Auto Disco did a very strange thing today?

It stuttered as though it was going to stop running and lost power and the steering suddenly lunged to the right and I had to fight it to keep on my side of the road. Luckily I was only doing 30mph.

The brake pedal don’t feel right either?? Never noticed that until after the lunge?

It has had a new PAS pump and new steering rods and gaz damper with new track rod ends. The tracking was all then done by computer and it drove straight and true, or it did!

It has 4 new General Grabber AT2’s

Any idea people what caused this to happen as I don’t want to drive it until I have some idea?

Don’t want to put it into a garage unless I have no choice, as I would rather fix it myself and knows its done properly.

Thanks in advance for any advice or ideas

I did hear a sqeek recently like a bleeding mouse when going slow in a car park?

will jack it up and check for front wheel wobbles

Cheers

Front NS wheel rotates smoothly and no wobble, OS rumbles and has a good quarter of an inch wobble to it, so hopefully thats my problem, so looks like i have a job tomorrow.

I will do a few searches on bearings to give me a guide

Thanks again for the help

Andy

Island 4x4 are only a 45 min drive away on the Isle of Sheppy.

I phoned them just now and they have them in stock, but i did not ask what make? Looking at their website they do stock Timken so thats what I will ask for when I go over there tomorrow.

Going to stick new discs and pads on while I am stripping the bearings out, will no doubt save me a job later.

Got a axle set of Timken bearings (4) with new seals, washers etc, plus new brake discs and pads for £105 all from Island 4x4

He did say they sell loads of the cheap bearing kits at a fraction of the price of the Timken ones and they dont get complaints. But the advice here on Landyzone is use Timken ones so thats what I am doing as I dont want to do it again in 6 months.

Spanners come out this afternoon so wish me luck

That happened to me once in my old 300 tdi, had just been boing 80+ on the M6 for about an hour then came off and was about a mile away from home doing about 30 mph when from nowhere the osf wheel just locked up pulling me over the road:eek:.

Thankfully there was no one coming the other way, the wheel was locked solid, after about 20 mins it cooled down and loosened up and managed to limp home at walking pace.
To say it was a bit of a shock was an under statement, there was no indication of a problem at all!

I have done a 1000 miles in the last 2 weekends mostly motorway speeds towing a trailer  So lady luck was on my side for once. Luckily I too was only doing 30mph when it pulled me into oncoming traffic.

Well here is how its going, look at the state of the inner bearing

The rollers are no longer round

I presume the bit I have arrowed below is part of the bearing and it is stuck solid, going to try to put a bit of heat on it.

Any tips on how to get it off

It wont shift even with heat. I have just been told to gently grind it paper thin on one side and it will go ping!! and split open. So off to buy a small angle grinder, going to need one for the welding later at MOT time so money will be well spent.

Got the grinder on it and off it came :D

The job is not finished yet. I am not sure I put the oil seal in the correct way round, so thats bugging me. I put it in with the U shape facing out of the hub. So I need to find out about that.

Also for some reason the shaft does not protrude far enough through for me to get the circlip back on? But the disc lines up in the caliper ok? The shaft did move in and out so i wonder if it is not lined up correctly for it to be pulled forward. So looks like I will be stripping it again tomorrow morning.

I have more idea of what I am doing now anyway within reason ;) so I will work it out. Once I have done the front ones the back ones are next on the list as no way do I want another seizing up on me.

Got it all to fit back together this morning :D

Took it for a drive this afternoon it drove several miles without so much as a squeak!! But now sounds like I have a goose stuck under my front wheel every rotation makes a noise and its worse when I brake.

So out come the spanners again tomorrow.

I put the old pads back in as I have had to order a special 12 sided 14mm socket to remove the disc so I have not fitted them yet.

Oh well its a learning curve............

I cant find out whats making this squeaky honking sound??

Its coming from the front O/S wheel and I jacked it up this morning to check it, the wheel rotates nice and smooth with no play or noise? Could I have the bearings to tight? I tightened them as hard as i could then slackened off a quater turn. They had to be done up that tight or i could not get the circlip back on the shaft.

I removed the brake pads and put them back with a bit of copper grease on the back. The noise is only apparent at slow speeds.

I thought it could even be the suspension, so I have bounced that around but no noise??

Any ideas people???

wheel brgs should be done up tight then the nut loosened and carefully feel the free play taken up with nut to brg so brg has no free play or any preload then fit tab washer and second nut which should be tight ,this second nut gives enough preload to brg by pushing other nut against threads, the circlip should go on easily if shaft is pulled out using bolt and grips while fitting

Thanks for the reply, looks like i may have over tightened them, I will try slackening them off again tomorrow to see if it cures it.

Will almost be able to do this job with my eyes shut in future :D

Thanks again

Great news, re-adjusted the bearings and silence once more, well as quite as a 300tdi Disco can be :D

Thanks for the help and advice guys
