Disco 1994 3.9 140K. Have just bought this as a weekend car to abuse and scare small animals and badgers on the lanes in our area as the 2.5TD wasn't loud enough. There is a knocking sound which at first sounds like the big ends but spookily is coming from the auto box. I suspect it is probably the mainshaft but do not have much experience of auto boxes. I have rebuilt gearboxes and engines before so have some technical expertise but unfortunatly don't have the time to undertake the prolonged tinkering that this may require to pin point.

Has anybody else had similar experience and if so what was the solution.

my car makes a weird noise sometimes. Its like a spark/crack/clunk noise, but i cant tell where its coming from. It has done it for ages, but don;t know what it is. It does it at random times, sometimes braking, accelerating or coasting in gear (TD5 auto).

Its really strange. Havent taken it to the garage for fear of massive bill!!

I have a similar noise, but I found out it was my baffle in my silencer, sounds just like a big end rattling.

Thanks, checked their site but a bit generic. The knocking is directly related to the rpm so if I discount big ends etc it must be on the input side of the box.

Checked that with Landy tool, eg bang the cat box hard and see if it rattles, no reattles just a shower of rust in my mouth.

same for me but the noise was directly related to rpm only a screwdriver told the story.

edit while somebody else revved it for me

I had a similar noise which was rpm related ,turned out to be flex plate on torque converter, in the end it tore center out of it so would not even start because no direct link between starter and crank,
