I bought a Disco 2 and collected it on the 11th May, the day after I rang them up and told them there was a problem with the clutch.....it was booked in for a new clutch. When the clutch was fitted it (or something else) started making a whirring noise so the car then went back a further 3 times in the 1st month of ownership but the dealer told me they couldnt hear anything?? Roll forward to no and the car started making a further noise so I contacted the dealer who put me in touch with their garage who fitted the clutch, he collected it after a week and informed me that it is the gearbox and will cost a £1000 to fix!! He also rang the garage to tell them before ringing me????
My question is this....would the garage who changed the clutch have known about the gearbox when he did it??? Also what the hell can I do as I really dont want to be forking out a grand for a problem I told them about right from the start!!! Btw the garage still has my car!!
Help needed urgently as I am getting in touch with trading standards today

Look for a good condition secondhand replacement gearbox and get it delivered too them? Or take it too another garage and get a second opinion, they will of quoted for a brand new 1

Thanks for the reply....but what Im asking is do I have any comeback to the original garage I bought from?? Can I prove that when he changed the clutch he will have known the gearbox was knackered??

I'd be looking for a LR specialist near you, post your location and someone on here might be able to point you in the right direction.
Can you describe the noise, any difficulty in engaging gears etc, the more info you give the more help you will get. :)

Dunno about comeback, but I'd get the vehicle off them and get it into a a Land rover specialist for a second opinion. Where are you? Someone might point you in the right direction or even have a listen to it and suggest whether it's usual or an issue ...

it was making a very loud whirring noise intermittently but I took it back 4 times and they said they couldnt hear anything!! Im in Bradford so think the nearest one to me is Farnells??

whats the actual symtoms ?, whine type noise when using the clutch pedal is quite common especially when someone fits a new clutch and doesnt look at spigot bush in the end of crank

I will go with jamesmartin on that one. If that noise is only after a long stand still, and then goes away its more than likely the spigot . Don't threat these are common, mine has done this for years & it's not an issue. YET!!!!!

the day I picked the car up it was slipping and losing power we took it back they 'supposedly' changed the clutch. As soon as they changed the clutch the noise started. it whines on the gearbox when in gear but only intermittently or when reversing it was always there! The warranty company said take it back to garage who fit clutch so I did he said the gearbox is knackered and it will be £1000 ish
Will he have known when changing the clutch that the gearbox was f***ed?? or will he have not gone near the gearbox?

does it only do it when using the clutch ,you would have your foot on the clutch pedal when reversing, you only remove gear box to change the clutch they wouldnt look at it , does it do it in all gears ,is it quiet in 4th ,does it drive okay ,you need to be sure of symptoms

it does drive ok and it is when the foot is on the clutch ie setting off in 1st or reversing. It makes a very loud noise when put into 5th gear

but last week a very loud knocking noise started which only disappeared when pressing the clutch it kinda sounded like the engine was tapping and working too hard but like I said the noise stopped when pressing clutch, the whirring noise is only when in 1st or reverse when foot is on clutch

does knocking noise go if you raise revs a little ,whirring noise if goes when pedal fully depressed but does it when pedal pressed is crank spigot bush its a common issue though isnt an immediate issue that needs sorting ,tapping is not enough clutch damping common if solid flywheel is fitted and if no new dual mass was fitted and olsd ones worn it wouldnt sound like gearbox if symptoms are correct ,
