Unlucky experience with Disco - should I go back?

Hi member,

I'm looking for some advice - I've recently purchased a S reg TD5 primarily for towing a boat with it and have had nothing but trouble with it. This has been my dream car but I'm now regretting getting it :-(

When I got the car it had an ACE leak which a garage have tried to fix twice, they have now said they can't fix it and suggest I do away with the whole ACE system. I then found a hole in the chassis which has been poorly welded (not too big a problem as I know somewhere to get it welded properly). But the biggest thing, yesterday, I notice a LOT of oil coming out of the bottom of the car and I mean it was running out. This turned out to be gearbox oil and the car is now not drivable.

I've had the car for about 2 months and had nothing but trouble with it - do I try again with another one or get something different. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Bex, if you bought this from a garage just take it back, get your money and find a better one.

ive had 2 td5 discos and had nothing but trouble with them, im a mechanic so i save money doing it my self but i was spending every weekend fixing it and spending money on it. wheel bearings, oil leaks, non starting, steering box leaking, rear crankshaft oil seal, air bags leaking and dropping over night, wet carpets etc etc. lovely looking motors but so unreliable. ive now changed to a 98 300tdi and only had bits and bobs to sort out and its never let me down yet. much easier to work on, cheaper to fix, more reliable than a td5. plus ive noticed the chassis on td5's dont seem to last very long, ive never heard of a disco 1 chassi rotting or needed welding as of yet. Might be worth thinking about down grading to a tdi
 
I have a 300tdi 1996 and its amazing, no sill rot, no chassis rot the only thing was a rust hole in the boot floor which i welded other than that they are really easy and cheap to work on :)
 
Thanks for all the replies, I did buy it from a garage but they are not going to give me my money back at the moment so we are fighting for it as as you say it is not fit for sale.

I got told to stay away from the early Discos as they have more trouble with them. I know all cars are different but would you say generally the 300tdis are better than the TD5?
 
Read the thread above. Contact trading standards and get your money back. To have the ACE fail and to be told by the garage to "remove it" is shirking their responsibilities. Write them a letter saying if it is not completely fixed within a week, you want your money back in full or you will be contacting trading standards.

I would like some advice on what the TDI discos are like?
 
Tdi's are an excellent disco but you gotta know what to look for. Boot, sills, inner wings ect. Plenty on here to search for. I've had 2 and wouldn't buy a td5.
 
Well I've had Td5's and 300 Tdi's.

All of my discoveries have ended up doing fairly major miles under my ownership due to my job.

I am also the first to admit that my servicing schedule is ......well ......flexible to say the least:eek:;)

Of all of the Discoveries, it has actually been my current TD5 that has done the best until the last few days with it's unexplained power loss.

I did have a steering box leak, but that was easily and cheaply fixed.

Second in the reliability cup would be the first 300tdi I had - did nothing but change the heater matrix when it developed a leak.

However the worst of the lot was my last TD5, which nearly put me off Landrover completely after the head failed, starter motor failed, injector failed.....I could go on :D

I struggled to get that to the poor unfortunate landrover dealer as a PX on this one.:D
 
like said just look out for rotten sills, boot floor, inner wings etc. i viewed 6 before i found mine, chassis seem to be a lot better on tdi's, engines are reliable if looked after and ive seen them at nearly 300k before and still running fine. ive had no problems yet with my tdi

Mines on 210 thousand miles and still going strong with various mods. Gets daily welly, pulls a twin axle transporter trailer and goes like stink when I need it to.

Put the problems right using a garage that know discos; ace leaks are not hard to fix....take it to someone who knows.

When good they are excellent vehicles.

If they won't give you a refund, you have to give them a chance to put it right, else trading standards ain't interested in helping you get money back... Currently having a going on with our disco, its been back to the garage twice with HGF, first time they used K-seal - got in touch with trading standards to see about refund - they said well give them another chance if they are willing to do it, second time they must have done the job properly as its done over 3k since then, sorted... (Mind you its going back again tomorrow to sort out what sounds like muhammed al-raghead under the bonnet with an AK-47!)

Do it by the book, then if they won't play ball, tell them you are getting in touch with trading standards - if they still dont do anything, let trading standards do their thing!
