Tools for D2 service

Hi

I'm keen to start doing my own servicing on my D2 and wondered if anyone has any recommendations of the most important/useful tools I should buy. Just aiming to tackle basic stuff for now - engine/transfer/axle oils, filters etc.

Any advice much appreciated!

Service manual and a shovel and a bottle of Tylenol.

Decent set of sockets (probably 3/8ths drive, but 1/2" also if you plan on doing heavy suspension work).

Some plastic jugs and funnels are always handy,an oil filter wrench of some kind,greasegun,some copper grease to stop stuff seizing up,decent ratchet spanners if you can afford 'em,a multimeter,LED cordless inspection lamp,some ramps and axle stands,a oil syringe (like a bloody great cake icer,for sucking oil out of diffs and similar) and an oil change tray.Could go on for ever,but that and a good socket set,breaker bar and selection of screwdrivers of all head profiles should see you right.Some of that list are luxury items but do make the job easier.

I dont know what the etc could be depends on the engine, ie. "engine/transfer/axle oils, filters etc" but for the first part, a strap to undo the engine oil filter, the air filter has a clipped cover and a socket and hex allan key to fit the drain and fill plugs. Perhaps a funnel and a syringe to help in the oil replacement.

So no full tool kit required for for these simple jobs.

Fair enough 'cool.....I was sort of trying to cover the etc part of the OP.

Thats ok Mr shocker over the years I have collected suff from a 3 ton trolly jack, ramps and stands down to a set of BA spanners as you do.. I haven't got round to the LED lamp yet, I still have a 60watt inspection lamp on the end of some rubber flex and a box of spare bulbs as I aways break a bulb or two, I also have a meter which is a Fluke

Basic service - 1/2 drive socket set; Combination spanners METRIC 8-22mm; Adjustable spanner (35 mm Jaw opening); glow plug spanner with long articulated handle; screwdrivers; Torx set; combination plyers; oil filter removal tool;funnel. In addition a brake caliper opening tool, copper grease and trolley jack would be useful

Ooooh,yes...that brake caliper windback is a nice tool if you are not confident of how hard to lever the pads back,good call.Then a brake bleed set,as simple or a complex as a spanner,a tube and a jamjar,to a gunson kit,to a hawkeye.

Cheers! Gonna start with the basics and if I don't cock up the simple stuff I can start expanding the collection of tools. So far the only servicing experience I've got was when I was 18 I did an oil change and fixed a faulty cooling fan on my then first car - a Montego. Luckily my Uncle had a truck yard back then with a pit I could use. I've obviously got alot to learn but then I guess that's part of land rover ownership. Picked up a Haynes manual and a RAVE CD to help get started too.

hiya, just changed the oil on my d2 diffs. the drain plugs need square section male sockets. sort of like allen keys. i got a set of different sizes from halfords.

i/2 inch drive rachettedoes them as well as t/box on some 22mm socket for plastic bungs 19mm spanner engine drain bung ,10mm socket for centrifugal filter
