Default Thought a steam clean would be good

Had an oil leak fixed on my TD5 and thought it would be good to get her steam cleaned underneath. What cock up!! Drove her away from the wash bay and onto the main road only to find she would not go above 1000rpm and kept trying to stall. Eventually crawled across the lights and parked up on the side of the road. Switched her off and then she would not start. The dash looked like a xmas tree with all the warning lights comming on.
One of the relays in the engine fuse box was clicking like mad even though the keys were in my hand. Seems like water had forced its way into the electrics. ECU was dry though. Anyway after waiting for an hour for the AA and drying out all the electrical connectors I could reach she fired up and runs as she did before. Moral of the story......use only low pressure water when cleaning the engine. Still, had a good look under her and she still looks like new.....thank goodness for South African weather (no salt, 5 months of the year with no rain etc)

Most steam cleaning plants in the UK state that an engine clean is at your own risk, because of exactly that - the ones around here also recomend yu leave the vehicle for an hour to allow the water to evaporate off, before starting.

Default Re: Thought a steam clean would be good

I used an engine degreasing fluid with my pressure washer and literally, " blasted the sh1t " out of my engine bay after fixing my valve cover gasket.

I was extremely carefull not to go any where near any electrics though.

Think I might of dodged a bullet there so I,ll not be rtying it again !!.
