Tdi 300 dpi

Chaps.
Going through the usuall checks with a friends recently bought Disco 300 .
It's fairly gutless untill 2000rpm,unlike my own tatty 300 tdi,which pulls strongly from tickover.When I gun mine I get black smoke,my friends refuses to smoke ( great for the enviroment,crap for pulling a big trailer ).
I will go throught changeing fuel filter ect. but wondered if the pump could be turned up ,and how ?

is boost pipe getween turbo and pump split,off

You can turn the pump up but I'd make sure everything is working how it should before you do. Have a butchers at this
