My TD5 started misfiring and died yesterday, had it towed to the local independent, anyway they said it was the Injector harness and wanted to charge me 1300 NZdollars just for a new harness. They cleaned up the original and said it would be good to get me home until I ordered one from Blighty, anyway I got about 10km from the garage and it did the same again. I called the tow truck, the guy tried starting it and it wouldn't fire, then started making clicking noise whenever you turn the key.
Questions:
1 Do you guy's think it could be the harness?
2 Could it be the fuel pump (it was getting noisy)
3 Is the clicking the sign of a stuffed starter?

Any help or advice would be appreciated:confused:

is there oil present at the ecu?
is there fuel pressure?, can you get it on a diagnostic? try the purge procedure.
you got a good charge in the battery?

Hi T1G UP
Its been on the diagnostic today, no fault codes were displayed according to the garage. They said there was oil present, but they cleaned it up, that's why they said it would get me home but told me to get a new harness. Landrover parts are rediculous prices in NZ, so I order them on line and get them shipped over.
Will check the battery out, hopefully just that and not the starter motor!

starter could be solenoid they are quite a common problem i buy kit off ebay for £10 can easily done with starter on vehicle usually just changing loom in rocker box is enough with cleaning plug on main loom,is battery poor and or alternator working and you cant allways tell by dash light ,ecu can play up if low voltage

Even with a cleaned up/new harness, oil will still be present in the ECU to Harness wiring loom. You need to get the ECU out and stand it upright, connectors down on absorbant towel over night. Also heavily spray each end of the loom with electrical cleaner spray. You will have to do this once or twice a week, or untill all traces of oil are gone. Problem is oil "wicks" along the cables, and enters the ECU. Quite a common fault. From memory my harness was £35 and new rocker cover gasket £15. Don't know if this is where your non starting/clicking is coming from though. Normally I would suggest starter for that. Good luck.

1. Unfortunatelly it's very important wat kind of diagnostic equipment is used on a Disco2 Td5 .... it's not comunicating with OBD2 code readers which most garages have...so it could be a poor diagnosis there....the oil in ECU gives certain missfiring and rough running but it's unlikely to stop the engine while running.

2. IMO it's more likely to have a faulty pump as u presumed...but there could be several more probs too ..... diagnostic with proper tool is very important..... Td5 still won't start - LR4x4 - The Land Rover Forum

3. the clicking s from the starter solenoid(the motor will be fine) ...this 'll cure it, u get fitting instructions too LANDROVER DISCOVERY TD5 STARTER MOTOR REPAIR KIT 98 on on eBay (end time 20-Feb-11 07:38:09 GMT) , just the top bolt of the starter is a bit naughty.... http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/faulty-starter-motor-d2-cheap-fix-119641.html ....or http://www.nationsautoelectric.com/Nippondenso.html

Just a quick update, I've been away so couldn't get anything done or access the net, thanks for the suggestions so far.

1. Tried starting it this arvo, no noise from the fuel pump, and only a low clicking noise from under the dash. (I'm thinking the fuel pumps stuffed but I'm not sure what the clicking noise is under the dash?)

2. Removed the red plug from the ECU, cleaned both ends with contact cleaner (I've ordered an new harness from the UK as well).

3. Put the battery on charge.

I'll try starting it again tomorrow afteroon, after the battery has had 24hrs trickle charge.

Could it be a coincidence that the starter, ECU loom and fuel pump all crap out at once or could it be something else?

Whats the best way to get at the fuel pump access cover, is from the split in the carpet under the rear seats or do I have to take the entire carpet out which means taking the side bins etc out as well?

If your disco is with third row seats and rear ICE controlls u have to remove RH third row seat and ICE controll from RH trim casing first..... if it's normal u just have to pull back loadspace carpet and u'll see the fuel pump access panel...the one with 6 screws...remove it and there u are

Update.
Thanks to Sierraferry and everyone else who posted help. Good news the fuel pump turned up this morning, I fitted it, bled it and she fired up like a goodun. Running real nice again (touch wood). Still waiting for the ECU loom to turn up.
Now do I get shut while she's going good and dare I say it go for a Toyota?

To be honest KD, these TD5's are usually pretty reliable. You've had issues with it but you have sorted out some of the most common frustrations so I would be keeping it if I were you.

As we have seen in the media recently, Toyota are not all perfection either?

Before u do that make a comparison between e.g. a D2 clutch repair kit or brake discs/pads(shipping included) and those for Toyota(where ever u buy it)...or other quite usual spares:eek:....and if u are a DIY type of guy download free a workshop manual or parts catalogue for it.
If i were u even if i would change my D2...i'd change it with a same one;)

Another thing to check if the fuel pump isn't running is the INERTIA SENSOR on the bulkhead, on the left side in the engine bay. It is easy to spot and easy to reach.

If it gets a bump or a knock it can trip out, and it shuts off the fuel pump.

Find it, and press down firmly on the button on the top of it.

You might get lucky.

1300NZ dollars is approx £599 for a £30 injector harness:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Even Ned Kelly wore a mask - the robbing bâstards !!!!!

An injector harnes is about £300 from www.ebay.co.uk; a new fuel tank pump will cost you between £120 and £210 depending on OE or aftermarket manufacturer.

WFX000280 TD5 Fuel Pump Discovery 2 4x4 on eBay (end time 28-Feb-11 15:18:15 GMT)

This guy will send it to NZ for £39 so a total delivered price of £140 - I suspect that can't be beat !!! He also does an Injector Harness for £25 !!!!

Good luck

Dave

I replaced the fuel pump and the ECU harness and all is good, bought the parts online from the UK.
The problem with Landrovers in New Zealand is lack of support, you have to go to the main stealers for diagnostics as the local garages don't have the programmes to read / reset fault codes, where as they can for Toyota.
If and when something does pack in the cars off the road for at least a week while I wait for the parts from the UK or I pay rip off prices.
I do enjoy having the disco, I've owned this one for 7.5 years (3.5 years of it in the UK) and I imported it to NZ, as I said the big issue for me with it now as she ages she's spending more time off the road with the common faults.

Hi there KD, have you considored buying yourself a diagnostic machine such as Hawkeye, then you wouldn't be so dependant on garages or LR dealers.

A pal and I bought one between us as we both have TD5's and it has been a really useful tool. Only last week we were using it to do a power bleed of the abs braking system on his car - it made the replacement of the fluid sooooooh easy and controllable that I'm going to do mine next week !!! Costs £254 delivered to my French address. There is v5 of Hawkeye coming out the end of April, so maybe wait until then?

As regards the age of your vehicle I would say that with preventative maintenance, it would last you many years to come. I live in the back of beyond with no services nearby, so I make sure that I have in stock most of the more obvious (and cheap!!) parts. Filters, crank sensor, fuel cooler O-rings, FPR O-rings etc etc. so if anything is slightly amiss, it normally gets resolved immediately.

Cheers
Dave
