Hello all,

My gearbox & clutch both recently packed up in my 1995 300tdi disco, no drive at all in any gear. Due to times being hard I was forced to try and replace both items myself (although I have no mechanical knowledge at all).

I took the old gearbox & clutch out & replaced the clutch with a HD version. As for the gearbox I was lucky enough to find one locally that had only done 3000 miles, bonus I thought.

The rest of the fitting went fairly straightforward and my disco now moves again. Its only since fitting the new R380 that I was told that my new box has come out of a TD5. After a bit of googling it seems that the td5 box will work but needs the input shaft changing!!

Here's my question, disco drives great. Only issue is a rattling noise after 2500 rpm. Should I be worried? Is my new clutch being damaged slowly? If I do need to strip it again and swap the input shaft is that an easy job? I'm really hoping that I don't have to strip it again, was a major mission for someone who doesn't know what they're doing?

Any help or advise is greatfull.

I would be worried as it should rattle so will only cause damage.
Although it was a bog job you have done it and know what you are doing so should be easier this time round.

if it had td5 input shaft it wouldnt have gone on there quite a lot longer than the 300tdi shaft let us know what the number is it is stamped near drain bung on drivers side should start 55a ,they are basically the same gear box has it really only done 3000 miles

The new gearbox was used on a hybrid landy on an expedition round Australia so it could have been modified, not sure on that.

I'm going to check the number on the gearbox this afternoon to find out more.

The rattle noise sounds more like its coming from the clutch to me but we'll see. Cheers for your help.

Are sure its not the thurst bearing thats no rattling. Mine does it on first start up, then shuts up after a second or two. Only say that as you said its coming from the clutch side of things
