Took our caravan away for the weekend, didn't make it, engine started misfire after 30 mins in traffic queue so I stopped and reconnected the electric fan (installed 1 year ago but never used). Misfire and power loss continues for another 15 minutes then came that hill. Gave up when the temperature gauge suddenly went from normal to overheat zone. Got towed back home 2hrs later and restarted no misfire, next morning took on test run for 5 miles OK. So we hooked up the caravan again but after 2 miles could hear and feel that misfire creeping back. Any suggestions?

dont know about td5 mate but that sounds like head gasket to me maybe just beginning to go so only noticed when hauling a large load ,is there any mayo in the water or oil cap? or has the water dissapeared? the mrs had a little rover that ran fine for 3 years with the head gasket on the verge of failiure because she only drove it for ten mins a day to work,it only died when i borrowed it for a run and gave it the beans oops! might also be electrical as electrics tend to play up when they get hot on any vehicle.

Sorry, should have mentioned, no water in oil, no oil in water, exhaust clean as a whistle. When it initially went (going up the hill) I saw the temperature gauge go from normal to the bottom of the red zone in only a couple of seconds - like a thermostat opening?

have a good mooch about on the forum mate cos i seen a few with similar issues on here in the last couple of days

ratty is right, sounds like blockages that only become apparent when under load... check rad and pipes i would...

Took it to our local specialist, top hose not really pressurised. Fault codes for all sorts but always No2 injector. Found oil in harness and ECU. Changed harness and drained ECU overnight. Problem solved!! Phew... thought I was in for a new cylinder head at one time.
