TD5 injector problem ?

Had a problem starting recently with my 98 Disco TD5 , normally jump in turn key fires up sraight away, every now and then it takes an age to start when it does get lots of black smoke from exhaust.
Had it to garage they fitted new fuel pump was only putting out low pressure ? still same, fitted new filter housing still same, fitted new injector harness still same problem runs for a while then takes an age to start again, been told now need 5 injectors as that is the problem . Anyone else had this or similar problems please.

Hi Barry, find another garage !!! They are not diagnosing the problem they are just replacing bits until you end up with a new engine.

Do they have proper LR diagnostic kit? If they don't they are wasting your time and money.

Ps Sounds to me like there is air getting into the fuel system, so check the fuel pipes.

Hi there. Do a search on injector washers, I had a similar problem, cleaned the fuel pump internal filters, new fuel filter etc, almost bought a new pump but after a good root about on here tried the washers first, cost 50 quid all in, sorted the problem. Read my posts on the subject, see if yours is displaying the same symptoms.

Thanks, yes had the washers done first, but still keeps doing it the fuel pump is only 18 months old too.
Will heve to keep eliminating things will ask them to look round the pipework next, if not try get it going and take it elsewhere as i seem to be having no luck where it is now.

As thebiglad said the best thing is to scan it for fault codes first...though the "difficult hot start"(among others) is a known symptom of ECT(engine coolant temperature) sensor incorrect signal output.
