Just a quick Q - mate of mine has a TD5 Auto disco - no difflock......:confused:

has hi/lo lever and has HDC. I thought I heard that some Discos did away with difflock - but I thought that was Disco3's not 2's :confused:

What is the history on difflock?
 
D2 early models...no lock but the essentials in box...mid to late models no essentials in box...last few in 04 had the essentials & the ability to use it from the cab out of the factory
 
In my opinion yes...HDC is a pain in the arse as it locks wheels when you dont want it to.
I never use it...but the TC becomes reduced in function if you enable diff lock and dont mod (or cut!) the feed for it to the SLABS ecu when you retrofit diff lock.Mod the wire & you have TC & difflock :)
If your mate has the nipple on top of the T box like you have on your disco where the cable connects to all he needs is the modified lever from Ashcroft...if he hasnt, they also do a full conversion kit, but thats quite pricey.

The later vehicles did not have the linkage fitted out of the factory to my knowledge, merely that it was available as an option (and the internals were back in the transfer box)
Difflock + TC is supposed to be fairly unstoppable :)

Covers the diff lock dates and reasoning, and yes you can get a linkage add on to put it back if you have the internals already depending on age of the Disco

You can put the internals in also, it's just a case of replacing the front casing of the transfer box with those with the difflock parts.

Well ours wasn't today, fortunately we have a good winch and solid trees.
 
Yup - problem with TC is that you sometimes have to press the accelerator to activate it, so if in mud you've already dug yourself in with the spinning wheel! Only way around that is to have a locker on the front and or rear diff or have or limited slip diff fitted. The central Difflock just seperates the front from back wheels. Very useful - but not a complete answer :)
