Strange wuring sound

Hi my 300 tdi auto is makeing a strange wuring sound. I think it is coming from somewhere in the running gear, I have changed the oil in both front and rear diffs (dull green sludge came out) and topped up but still makes noise and oil in gear box is ok! It only rely starts at over 50 and under load as soon as I lift off it stops?????? Any ideas? Cheers

There is a small chance it may be your viscous fan at the radiator kiking in as I have had this noise with my V8 auto disco although more so in warmer weather and when towing.

It may be your torque converter not locking up and still slipping but I am no expert in autos.

Try removing the viscus fan (left hand thread) and take it for a run, if the noise is still there it may be the torque converter.

sounds like your diff, check union joints on prop shafts for small amounts of play and check the flange on the diff for play.

Just a thought... My friend brought his to me with a similar sound came and went when on/off power strangely enough it was the u joint on the front prop close to the transfer get a hold of it and check for play... worth a try and good luck

I agree that could be prop jnt, even if there is no play drop shafts at one end and make sure jnts aren't siezed.

If there is play in them is there any way for a quick fix ie water pump grease till I can get enough beer tokens togeater?

the epyclic units can whine in auto box as box ages more noticeable under load
