Ive got a strange noise now that I hear when slowing down like a slow helicopter blade. Sometimes I hear it faster at speed. I think its coming from the front , maybe propshaft ?

Ive give it a twist and can feel about quarter inch play. Its an auto tdi . I jacked the front and put it in neutral , then rotated front n/s wheel and could hear a click at a certain point.

is that play in the UJ's or play in the diff or play in the T-box?

Sorry mhm, Just grabbed the front propshaft and gave it a twist and there was some play in it. Not sure if thats normal. How do I check for wear ?

in pro ujs there should bo no play /movement at all in diff flange no in/out end float or up/down but will rotate a little as will t/box end but it will move up/down a little

easy way to check UJ's - hold both flanges at one end of prop in one hand and with other try rotating propshaft. If yu can feel any movement between the two flanges in your hand, then UJ is knackered.

So at the diff end on front axle there should be no movement/play twisting it,and no movement up and down/ in and out. transfer box end should move a little and up/ down and rotate a little. Right ?

The whole propshaft rotates about quarter inch each direction including the ujs. The front diff end uj seems solid but there is slight play up and down at transfer box end. Probably about 1mm play. Could this be the cause of the strange noise ?

take the front prop off (yu have to to fix it). drive it with difflock engaged and see if click is still there. Yu can check UJ's easier off car - if they flop about then would be worth replacing, tiz an easy job and yu can do both for about £16.

front output does have some movement as is ball brg ,i would check hand brake shoes arent catching and remove both props one at time to narrow problem front or back

I think I might have found the problem of the strange noise. Just went to take the rear n/s wheel off and the nuts were loose can,t understand how that happened because I always tighten them well with a wheel brace and put my body weight down on it and I weigh about thirteen stone
