Sticking Handbrake

Now the weather is getting colder I have noticed that the handbrake handle does not want to release properly, it goes down but when you take off your hand it pops up about an inch and the red P light comes back on. When the engine is hot it works ok. Its a 92 plate 200tdi if anyone has any ideas??

Sounds like the cable is gummed up. Or is the 200 Disco a rod operated linkage? In which case I'd check any link pins/connectors for corrosion/****e.

If it's a cable I'd try getting some thin oil, 3in1 maybe, down the cable from the handbrake lever end. Lift the gaiter and you should see the cable, just dribble some drops of oil onto the cable and work it in, keep doing this until it frees itself, then do it a bit more ...
