Firstly - Do not touch the accelerator when starting a TD5

When was the fuel filter last changed?
Have you checked for a leak from the FPR block?
Have you tested the battery (drop test)?
Have you checked your earths are good?

Once again, you must suspect the injector copper washers. It sounds to me as if one of them may be leaking gas from the cylinder up into the fuel gallery in the head. Once the engine is running it can cope with a little gas, but at start-up time it's a bummer to get it going because the injectors don't fill up properly with fuel, and injection pressure fails to develop. The least trace of gas in the fuel gallery in the cylinder head and the whole thing goes down the drain.

You should NOT have your foot on then throttle pedal whan trying to start a TD5. This is VERY important. You MIGHT be setting the engine into fuel purge mode if you have your foot on the pedal before you turn the key, and that floods the engine with fuel to the point where it may not start.

The different feel on the throttle pedal is either your imagination or a faulty throttle position rheostat.

To start TD5
Neutral
Clutch DOWN if a manual.
Do NOT press accelerator pedal
Turn key to IGN
Wait till yellow GLOW lamp goes out
Turn key till engine fires up - KEEP KEY TURNED - do not stop-start on starter.

But, It does make me suspect injector washers.
It isn't a bad job to do if you are careful and work VERY CLEAN.
