Hi

Had a search but can't find the answer. Looking at changing the springs on my 200tdi Disco. Which spring compressors should I be looking at getting (i know you can do the job without them) ? I want to invest in some but want to make sure I get the right ones.

Thanks

Spot on bluesticky1,best you can afford.
Does this always make sense? Professionals need the best because they use them day in, day out, but how often do you change your springs? In this case if they last long enough to do the job then surely that's enough?

But they only need to fail once to make a mess of you.....
Yes, I did say they have to do the job, but once not a 100 times.

Buying the same tools as those that a professional mechanic would buy is often over kill. Yes, a home mechanic's tools have to be safe and up to the job you are doing, but you aren't doing the same job as a professional mechanic.
So, buy from a reputable manufacturer, but not necessarily top of the range stuff

silverline - would you buy?
aldi/lidl - would you buy?
laser - would you buy?
draper -would you buy?
machine mart - would you buy?
snap on - would you buy?
halfords - would you buy?
that german/norwegian make you see at shows bergen? - would you buy?

hard to call between diy decent and diy c**p for one-off tools

For this particular tool 'spring compressor' I got my set in the late 70s to change the front springs on my Capri, the only other time they have been used was in the 90s to change all the springs on my RR and thats it, so used twice it may have paid me to hire a set for a weekend or two. :)

So just get the budget set around £20 -£25 even less if you can, unless u are going into the suspension replacement business. :)

Fact is you don't need them, Just repalced all of my springs without compressors, use the bottle jack! I was full time motor trade about 15 years ago, bought Snap On tools when I could, still got all of them because I quickly learnt that if you buy inferior tools you will replace inferior tools on a regular basis, Snap On tools all have lifetime guarantee which means a life time, if they break without being abused they will replace F.O.C. Anyone who works in the trade will tell you that cheap tools won't last!
