Hi just got myself a 99 Disco TD5, 93000 miles.
There's quite a lot of vibration through the gearstick pretty much all the time. i.e. you wouldn't want to hold onto it too long. Is this normal? Worst between 40-60 mph, much smoother at 70.
Could it just be the tyres. All 4 are matching Hankook, and from receipts that came with vehicle were put on at the same time, but there is definite extra wear on the inside of the tyre on the drivers side.
Have read some people mentioning prop shaft problems.
Where should I start? Getting tyres re aligned, or swapping from and back?

Thanks for replying. I'll see if I can get it checked out.

Can anyone recommend a Land Rover specialist in Glasgow / Ayrshire area?

Before spending any money spend a little more time trying to track down where the vibration is coming from.

First check to see if it's engine-related by revving it up in neutral to see if the bad vibes are there?

Then drive at 40mph in different gears and see if there is any change?

The first thing I would be checking in detail would be the U/j's on the front propshaft and the U/j and rubber doughnut on the rear, for wear and deterioration.

Thanks for your advice. I spoke to a friend defender tonight, who thought it might be the prop shaft balancing weight.

Thanks for the replies. Having driven it a few hundred more miles, the issue is worst in 5th, not too bad in 4th, and doesn't occur at all lower down. Worst of all is 5th and 2250 revs, going faster eases it which makes it feel like it resonates at that point. You can see the vibration in the gearstick, about 1cm either side of where it should be, and feel it through the accelerator. There's very little vibration in neutral. One guy I spoke to thought it might be a worn bush in the gear box, due to a previous owner driving with their hand on the gearstick? Does that sound plausable?

there isnt any bushes in gear box ,you can get noise as well as vibration from worn brgs ,holding hand on stick would wear selectors and you do see some like that ,but it can be felt through stick during changes, not as vibration, has it still got wieght hung behind hand brake drum and is it loose

i've done acouple cars like this, and everytime its been the dual mass flywheel. Hoping its not for you matey, and uj's could well be a good route to follow
