My custom sd roof rack is coming on friday and he has just let me know that it has been made for a disco 2 without roof bars

so the question is do the roof rack bars come off or is it a case of an angle grinder?

thanks
mpower

Your going to be left with holes in the roof if you take the bars off.

I would wait and see when your roof rack arrives it might fit.

no it definately doesnt ive just spoken to him its a cusom made on and he has just told me that it doesnt fit.

whats the best way of doing this then anyone? am i going to just have to cut them off?

Hi Mpower

Take the headlining out and this will reveal two nyloc nuts either side holding the roof bars on. Once out they will leave a 6 mm hole is, find some rubber or plastic plugs and mastic them in place to prevent the inevitable leaks.

I have just had the lining out to seal both sunroof frames in.

It is not a bad job just a little time consuming, it took two of us about 30 mins to get it out and 40 mins to get it back in.

Hope this helps

blood hell! bit of a mission! is there any sort of clips that im likely to break that i should buy first?

secondly is there any instructions or guides to help or is it pretty simple?

what did you use to plug up the hole?

thanks for the help

Sounds like you are trying to fit something youve paid to have made but you dont like the way its been made.

If its `custom made' why not send it back to get it to `custom fit' the way you want?

In you own words a "custom sd roof rack", it's not custom made if it don't fit.

because i aint patient enough! i asked for a copy of a sd roof rack, he didnt ask whether i had them and i didnt tell him.

Did you actually remove the roof bars? They may be 6mm holes on the inside (although i think they are 8mm) but when the bars are removed you're left with a hole at least an inch on the outside.

The roof bars should just unbolt as has been stated. Might be a little bit stuck where the waterproofing foam seals are, but should come off fine.

The holes on the outside I would expect to be s4mm diameter, as that is what you have to drill for the extention rails if you fit them (currently sat waiting for a dry day and me to feel brae enough to drill the roof).

you should be able to get some grommets, and seal them up.

For removing the headlining, I found an excellent guide to fixing sunroof leaks on here which made it all very simple.

can't remember where it was. Have since rebuilt my laptop and didn't save my bookmarks.

I think it was written by Mantamad though.

Try a search?

You Dont even have to remove the whole headlining to remove the roof rails.

Remove the front over head map pocket

Remove sunvisors and fittings

unclip the front seat belt "B" pillar trims

Remove grab handles and just lower either side a bit and you can get to the nuts holding them on.

Hours work tops. The holes left are quite big at 35mm. Land Rover do make a plug / bung that fits nicely and can be made even more watertight by installing them with silicone.

woudnt it be a bit easier yo modify the new roof rack to fit.... might be a simple as cutting out a crossbar? ,

mind you i would expect someone making or supplying roof racks to know if they wont fit over roofbars and to ask if theyre fitted....
