Yes I stand corrected, was thinking of the 300tdi I have-reason rev counter dead is the wire wasn't connected:doh:

I now admit to a 300tdi disco tractor:eek: just the gaylander to buy and I'll have a set as had a range rover
 
Yeah the v8 is taken from the alternator like a diesel.

When my alternator goes bad my rev counter stops working.

Could be a dodgy alternator if it's not the connection on the back.

dont disco 200's have rev counters as standard?

does he mean "fix" as in "get working"?

Not quite MHM - injection pulse is taken from the coil. Rev counter connected to back of alternator. If rev counter not working either broken wire or loose connection or the alternator has an issue. Obviously the other possibility is that the rev counter itself has a fault, maybe a broken track or internal short - remove the instrument binnacle and take out rev counter and inspect is as much as I could suggest.
