I recently bought a 1997 TDI which didn't have a stereo (the previous owner supposedly wanted to keep it).

I bought a Kenwood CD player at halfords (yeah, I know, but it was half price with free fitting).

There is a constant static type hiss from the speakers when the stereo is on, the fitter at Halfrauds tried fitting a seperate suppressor but it made no difference.

He suggested the unit was picking up interference from the Disco's built in amp. Does this sound likely or does it sound like a load of bull??!!

His suggestion was to find the amp and hard-wire around it or re-wire the fitted speakers direct to the new head unit.

Any ideas / siggestions?

Thanks:confused:

I found what I think is the replacement part I need on the internet........
AMPLIFIER

Part number: AMR5271
Applicable Models:
DISCOVERY SERIES I 1989-1998

the silly f... question time is - where exactly in the Disco 1 is the damn Amp located, don't want to remove every panel or the entire dash looking for it

that looks like the arial signal amp.. its below the alpine window on the off side.. behind the trim.. the speaker amp is in the boot door attached to the speakers in the door..

thanks, but my Disco doesn't have a speaker in the rear door (it's a Jap import, don't know if that makes a difference)

so not sure where it might be?

Only Japanese spec disco 1's have a seperate audio amp located behind the one of the kick panels (drivers side I believe). It's not compatable with your new UK head unit and should be removed or at least the 4 loudspeaker feeds removed and extended and then wired direct to your head units outputs .
A proper ICE fitter would have done that, so much for Halfords then.
As stated above, the pic is of an arial signal amp which you don't need.

Thank you Discool - that's exactly what I needed to know :)

I'd normally avoid Halfords but the unit was half price so it seemed like a good idea at the time

as discool says but the amp was in the passenger side kick panel on mine.

just ran some new cabling from the head unit to the amp and cut and connected the speaker wires before they entered the amp.

oh and just took the fuse out of the amp for good measure

Job done.
