hi all i have a 300 tdi disco m reg with the r380 gear box. the problem im having is some rather worrying rattles coming from the gearbox/transfer box. the noises are only present on tick over with the clutch released, if i press the clutch down the noise go off. the gear changes are a little notchy, but they always have been. is this time for a recon box's ?
any help will be gratefully recieved

I think that it is highly unlikely to be a gearbox problem so breath easy. It sounds exactly like the clutch release bearing is worn and in need of replacement. It's a 5 min job once you've split the bellhousing away from the engine.

Cost of part? About a tenner.

have you recently changed clutch ,this was a real problem a few years ago with clutches an improved clutch was introduced and fixed it (the springing in the clutch center was improved)this often happens again with h/d clutches but normally the noise reduce after it settles in the classic symptoms were a rattle that sounds like the gear box which goes away with increased revs or depressing clutch, your clutch center might be breaking up ,notchy gear change is usually caused by the outer dog teeth on baulk ring wearing thre supposed to be a triangle shape to guide synchro into gear dog teeth but the edges wear off over time to the point that they cant guide fully, you would probably be best having new clutch (borg and beck ive found best £60 kit)and brgs and baulk ring renwed in new year ,its always a good idea to change gear box oil annually

thanks for the advice, its re-asuring. i changed the gear ant tranny box oil when i bought the disco about a year ago, so its due in the new year. was thinking of putting this new MTF stuff in the gear box.
thanks
