Preparation for Waxoyl

Most of any waxoyl on the diffs and wheel arches and a few other places at the front of the vehicle will be washed off after a six months by the rain/spray so it will require re-applying something I do once every year.

They do not charge by the hour its a set price and they take most of the day to do the job,they have "lances" to get in all the tight spots and into the door cavities in,as regards taking stuff off so they can get at all points on your vehicle I personally would not worry as the guy that did mine sprayed just about everywhere.As for doing it your self yes you save money but waxoyle gets in yer eyes, yer hair, yer clothes its a horrible job and lets be honest if you can afford it its one job where in my opinion its better left to someone else to do the dirty work.

if it's all washed out of the wheel arches, diffs etc... within 6 months due to road spray (which I can understand), how can they offer a 5 year guarantee?? surely it has to stay on longer than that...

5 year guarantee on what. You will have to check their T&Cs, perhaps it's just cavity perforation, perhaps you will have to have an inspection carried out by them every 12 months then it's call "fully comp" and any problems will be sorted.

Just like my stainless exhaust with a life time guarantee it must be checked every 12 months, you have some hope there Janspeed.

OK, I had that clarified today. it's a 5 year warranty. Basically, if any of it comes off within 5 years, they'll sort it free-of-charge.

In summary, they appear to have done a fantastic job. I stayed throughout the entire process and saw everything that was done. It was cleaned thoroughly, cavity wax applied in every cavity that was accessible through one route or another, and hardwax applied to the entire underside of the vehicle, including the tops of stuff (that isn't visible).

I will have a better look either tomorrow or the day after, once it's dried and it's daylight, but having looked underneath it while it was still wet, I can't spot any part of it that's not covered!

So overall, I'm very pleased with Rustmaster indeed!

Just had a look at their site, it seems that we have been thrown by just using the word "Waxoyl" and you were getting the same stuff sprayed on your disco as the DIY stuff that we can get from Halfords.

You have had the "Waxoyl Professional" cavity and hardwax treatment which is a little bit different, and product manufactured by Waxoyl.

"Waxoyl Professional" looks similar to the protection that my disco had which i'm sure all D1s did when thay left the factory although they were undersealed aswell.

I'm sorry... i don't quite understand your last post... you said

As far as I'm aware, I had "Waxoyl Professional" cavity and hardwax treatment, as your second statement says. This is indeed a product manufactured by Waxoyl.

Which one of your sentences needs correcting??

Shouldn't you be doing it twice a year?

Didn't they protect the tyres or anything else from overspray?

May be but I don't, anyway the wheel arches are undersealed as is most of the underside

Fishsponge, I did say "thrown" ie, led to believe, so both are correct if you read the whole sentence and don't leave out half of it.

No need - they were so careful there wasn't any overspray to speak of!

Ah, ok... think I read it one of two ways!

They seem to do a pretty good job.

A question I have is after the high pressure steam cleaning how did they dry everything before wax coating it all? Or did they apply it over the damp metal etc? That’s the only concern I have, as to me trapped moisture will cause corrosion will it not.

I am either going to have mine done in the spring by somebody like this or I will be doing it DIY with a few air tools as you can buy a shutz gun with cavity applicators quite cheap.

As we both had all the time in the world, they basically let it air dry. I believe they have a hot air blaster (glorified hair drier) for quick drying, but there was no need in my case.

As for trapped moisture, I took the time to read the Waxoyl information book! As it happens, the official Waxoyl book says that because Waxoyl contains water inhibitors/repellants, applying it to a moist surface doesn't really matter. I only saw it applied to dry surfaces on my vehicle (because we'd let it all dry), but I suspect it was applied to some moist surfaces (between the diff guard and the diff, perhaps).

Anyway, time will tell, I guess. I've only heard good things about Rustmaster, the official Waxoyl book says it can be applied to damp surfaces, it comes with a 5 year warranty and appears to cover the entire underside of my vehicle (visible and invisible surfaces), so with a bit of luck.............

OK, i've put together a make-shift one-wheel ramp on my drive, driven the Disco onto it and snapped a few pics of the Waxoyl coating now it's dried!!

Having taken all the photos, and having put it flat on the drive again, I checked all the bits where it looks like the Waxoyl is coming off. Thankfully, none of it has come off. It is all surface muck and sand from the road and my drive

Looks pretty good, I think! Time will tell though......... although unless I've scraped it on a hill while off roading, for example, it'll get free touch ups for the next 5 years, so I'm covered if any comes off!

gotta say does look really good. my experience of Waxoyl was when i owned a classic Vauxhall. Rrnowned rot boxes in the late 50s early 60s. Was my first car at 18. most lads had Escorts or Marinas i had a 20 year old waxoyl treated Victor. was in real good nick ( purely down to the Waxoyl) just one point thou thats interesting, Waxoyl was only available back then in a tan like colour. lookong at your pics obviously now its available in black.

Yep - black & clear. Not sure which one lasts longer, but black is used most of the time I believe!

Looks like a good job. Its the reassuring scent of Waxoyl that pervades the car for the next month that I like )
