So you have a car of some sort, that leaks oil occasionally then doesn't, tinkled (at the side of the road presumably?) puffed out blue smoke, then didn't.

Ade, would it make sense if you shared with us some details of your vehicle? Such as model/engine type/gearbox type/year/mileage, stuff like that?

It's all a bit vague.

I agree but then what ever it is if it was leaking oil .... and now isn't....

I'd be worried that there was no oil in it now    :D

HI

right ok so I am a doc* head it is a 1995 2.5 tdi 5 door in red and the tinkle was at 85 been told it might have semi sized as it was over heating at the time due to me taking the fan off for winter

Thanks Ade

more like your rad isnt cooling all over ,when engine warm feel rad across core see if its hot all over if not buggered, you shouldnt need fan at 80 ,but you should have had fan in any case

check coolant with both bungs out one on rad one on thermostat housing fill till all holes overflow, you cant overfill only underfill any excess will come out of cap harmlessly, check oil leak and hope head gasket aint gone or piston picked up on bores

Whichever way round check all your levels and find out where the oil came from.

When a land rover stops leaking it means there is no oil left in it...

thanks for all the reply s had not given the rad a thought just the fact i had taken the fan off for the winter!! the prob with the oil leak is the is no leak now it must only be leaking at speed on a long journey the only oil drip i could find was from the bell housing plug could it be crank seal ???

thankyou again

ade

my crank seal leaks a lot, but it is worse on long journeys at high speed, so yours could be leaking only on the motorway perhaps.

who knows. clean the underside and make it do it again!

Hmmm, 4 hours each way at 75-80 in a 16 year old landy? the tinkling was probably the engine giving up the ghost and getting ready to drop it's guts!

60 is a more friendly speed ;)

Stick the fan back on, I tried it off and it makes no difference what so ever if the viscous hub is ok.

Wipe it all down then try another drive and the oil leak should be more visible.

I had a weird one last year with a hairline crack in the power steering pump that leaked when stopped but didnt when the engine was running. If its not the above then you need to get underneath when you've taken it for a run.
Hope this helps
