my disco 2 is now a complete off roader so goes through alot of mud and water, since i started this project the original alternator packed up so i changed it for a new one which has now packed up again 3 months down the line.

both i beleive packed up to water damage? is there such thing as a waterproof alternator? or is this just going to be an ongoing fault?

manhy thanks.

MOD issue wolf land rovers are fitted with waterproof alternators. I've only ever seen one for sale in an MOD clearance house.... Not normally available in civvy street I don't think (tho would be interested if someone finds one available to joe public).
Think they are about £350 a piece....

and £350 is a hell of a lot of WD40!....or same as half dozen regular issue alternators

what do you mean alot of wd40 mate? my last alternator cost me £280 fitted and its lasted 3 months....

id rather spend £350 on a waterproof one and it last a while! do you have any more info on that mod one matey?

hah fair enough ill see what i can do! does anybody have a guide on to remove the alternator? is it a hard or simple job?

thanks again

My off road alternator is a cheap one pal. 38 quid from euro car parts for the good, old 3.5 v8 :D

Don't like to rub it in, but buy the cheapest one you can find (second hand maybe?) and then it won't hurt so bad when it goes again.

In fairness my last one has lasted nearly a year but may be showing signs of up and coming failure, second one lasted 2 weeks though. Pot luck :)

...to be honest I would be mounting it higher up if I could to keep it out of the mud and water. I've done this with my 200tdi Series 2a by using the mount that is usually reserved for the air conditioning...whether this is possible with yours I don't know

....just a thought

Its a good job to do. Recommend a Haynes manual to read first....disconnect battery first is a good safety thing too
£280 for an alternator...I should hope it was fitted!.
Yep, what the others say, get to your local rotary electrics reconditioner. Can usually pick one up for about £40-50
Honestly, you aint gonna find a waterproof MOD one. BTW about £350 was the price the one I saw go for in the auction (ramco ex MOD stock) not new price!
