I found this doc (manual) useful.

Looking thru it - this seems like a good half-way house sorta tool as it has its own built in display - wot do you guys that use them think?

It looks like a good compromise to me. The only thing that you may find frustrating is finding the OBD connector in some vehicles. They aren't always where they say they are.
