Dear all, here is a question for the Forum..

I have been watching the news and I was horrified to discover that the new emission charge for TFL with now also apply to small vans and any SUV vehicle.. Apparently the answer is to fit a new diesel particulate filter which would reduce emissions. The vehicles would then apparently have to be tested yearly by VOSA to ensure they comply. I was also informed that this wont even guarantee that they will pass the emissions test?!

Now, It apparently will apply to any vehicle pre 2002 (I think).

I panicked and got all emotional at the thought of having to spend more money and threw a few teddy's out the old pram and did some checking on TFL..

Now my colleague tapped in his VRM in to the TFL site. It stated he would need to adapt his Defender (P reg. 90 with TD5). I tapped my Discovery, X reg, 2.5 TD5 in and I didn't. For some reason, mine is outside the catchment... Now I don't want to find out if I am wrong later, but why do I not need to do anything to my disco and yet my colleague who has exactly the same engine on a defender has to pay for the modification?

This is all very bizaare and I can't figure out why?

Can anyone else explain or am I missing something obvious apart from the fact that I am overjoyed that I don't have to spend an obscene amount of money..

serach for lez on here covered lots.

It applies to commercials, as you stated, not cars. MIGHT be a problem with a Disco commercial. Depends on what it's registered as. If your mate has a problem passing the test one option is to run a couple of tanks of biodiesel through it. Apparently some taxi-drivers have found that this burns clean enough to avoid having to modify/replace their engine (taxis are subject to a similar test). By the way this new reg is expected to save several thousand lives a year, as well as a shedload of money - big EU fines are going to cut in if we don't get the particulates down.

Cool.. Might be tempted to have a look and do something for my disco's engine.. Tis a bit smokey. Just a thought.. would a leaking head gasket fail an MOT?

Not as such, I think. But if the HG is causing polution in the exhaust it might I suppose. Bear in mind also that the diesel MoT requires the engine to be run at high revs for the test. I don't think I'd want to do that with a dodgy gasket. And the examiner might refuse to do that part of the test if he suspected a problem.

Low emission zone has got nothing to do with your vehicles actual emissions. Its all to do with the emission standard commercial vehicles were manufactured to. Putting biodiesel in the tank or adjusting IP's isn't going to have any effect on whether the vehicle is exempt or not.

Sorry. I stand corrected.
Biodiesel may help you with emissions for the MoT though.
