hi everyone, i'm getting towards the end of the things that need doing on my 95 discovery 300. (fingers crossed, i keep finding things)

the inside of the wheel on my passenger is 'wet'

i thought it was a claliper leaking and took the wheel off to find that the caliperis is fine. i'm not loosing brake fluid and the pedal pressure is ok...

so my question is, what seals/o rings or gasket on the end of the axle could be leaking onto the wheel???

many thanks

So, after checking the cards and dancing around the fire I came to the conclusion that you are talking about your front axle.

There it is pretty common that the swivel ball sealing is bad. That is no big deal to fix but mostly there is a second sealing gone inside the axle that prevents hat oil comes out of your diff.

Pic is from the net, don`t know from which model. just to get a clue

bugger, damn, bugger... sorry guys

it's a the nearside/passenger side of the rear axle on a '95' v8 discovery

In that case I`m bad as a prophet :5bwilly_nilly:

never had a leaking rear axle on my car. There are sealents and it is oil inside so it might leak.

sorry, no help

Ok so working on that the only possible fluids are brake fluid or diff oil.

I think you have satisfied yourself that it's not brake fluid, so there must be a worn oil seal or two on that side of the back axle.

If it was me I would be buying an axle set of of seals and gaskets plus wheel bearings and rebuilding the axle, both sides can be done quite easily in a day. Parts won't cost much either.

What thebiglad says ^^^... I had the same and stripped the side back to the stub axle and had to replace that as the seal had gone and found it was diff oil leaking onto the rear pads...

looked at the shock.... not that

double checked the caliper.... not that

so does that leave just the stubb axle inner or outer seal or is there something else???

As said before, get a seal kit and change every seal.
If everything else is dry, that is the only possibility

thanks for the replies, i guess it's time to put the grinder and welder away...

and time to get my jack and sockets out!!!

but i think i'll keep my lump hammer close by, just in case...
