Afternoon chaps,

I've recently bought myself a 96 discovery 300 tdi (XS model i beleive).. I've bought it as a third car and a bit of a workhorse/fun car and mainly to take it to le mans this year with all our gear.

The car's had a few niggly electrical bit's that i've managed to fix myself (speakers not working, air con not working etc) but i do have a few other questions being i've never owned or even been in a land rover before..

Car doesn't smoke and starts first time. it's done 127k and is a manual.

The car seems to struggle getting up and over 70.. and when it hits a hill at that speed seems to really struggle. After a bit of research i'm thinking it could be the EGR valve? - just wondering if this would be the first place to look or if anyone has any other suggestions?

Secondily, i have a little judder through the car when it gets over 55.. I'm guessing the big wheels don't help, but i'm wondering if this is just normal land rover driving? or should it be smooth?

Third, After about 60 miles of motorway driving i appear to have leaked some oil on to my nice new driveway much to the disapointment of the wife. I've had a look underneath and there's a slight leak from what looks to be the transfer box? - Any suggestions on how i can fix this, or is it an expensive garage job. Anything i need to worry about?

fourth, the clutch... All works well - has a rather high biting point and is quite heavy, but seems sticky on the way down/up (kind of a creeking on the foot).. Just wondering if it will just be a case of greasing up some parts?

And last but not least, the car has a quite cool roof rack of some sort on it, but i can't work out why the front has a lip and the rear doesn't? just wondering if i'm missing something from it?

I apologise for all the queries, but i'm hoping some of you nice chaps will be able to assist ?

Here's some pictures of it and the offensive leak and car:

Many thanks in advance..

Craig.

leak depends on where output seals change fill rear of seal with grease to hold garter spring in place and check flange for grooving,

Hiya Scooby,
On the EGR Valve, the best thing to do is remove it. You can get blanking kits off Fleabay for less than £20 quid, and there's plenty of stickys on Landyzone to show you how to do the job. Secondly, look at getting a decat downpipe, to remove the catalytic converter. Again, look on Fleabay...I've just got a pipe for £23.98 (inc. posting) which arrived yesterday, so hopin the weather's good this weekend so I can get it fitted. Thirdly, you can tweak the diesel pump (again, great sticky on here), just look for 'Sluggish disco...not any more!!'. Those three alone should give you a bit more performance.
Hope this helps.

do an intercooler flush when you do the EGR and also clean out the fuel sedementor and change your fuel filter, both easy inexpensive jobs and will restore a little bit of power.

Clutch forks are prone to wearing though.

You just bought a land rover... get used to the oil on the drive. :D

Its good that its leaking, means there's still oil inside, you only have to start worrying when there's no leaks..lol

I noticed the biggest difference to the performance of my 300tdi was after I did the valve clearances. Then a bit more with the Sedimenter & filter, then the intercooler, then the split turbo hose, then the air cleaner.
I would/did fix all the simple service stuff first before you get into the Modding.

Roof rack looks like its been modified to fit a roof tent, they are big bucks and wouldn't of been included in the sale unless agreed beforehand I reckon.

As above with box oil at least its got some in!!

De-egr!

Thanks Chaps...

Just had the egr removal kit turn up so will fit that..

The roof rack thingy came with the car :)

Any instructions as to the sendimeter?

thanks again all...

Craig.

search out the sedimentor - plenty of threads on here, basically you'll need a 11mm spanner, lie on your back under the back axle and drop the bowl off, clean and refit.
