my discovery cuts out every half a mile under strain then a night mare to restart.

hi there all again..things have gone from bad to worse naw.i am now thinking of useing my sledge hammer on it...after every ones comments on my last thread i worked through every thing and changed the lot..the things i have changed are as listed..fuel pump as stated in last thread but that was changed cause my original stopped working about a month ago..then 2 weeks later my td5 started cutting out.so i have naw changed fuel filter, cleand air bleed valve, checked and cleaned fuel reg, cleaned and changed my injector seals and copper washers, fitted new injector harnes, new air fillter.been on diagnostics and no codes found.after fitting everything it run great for 2 days so decided to take kids away with caravan..then just my luck.half way through wales every time i hit a hill or under strain which being in wales meant that was every 2 minites it would start spluttering then cut out..then would need to turn it over for 2 to 3 min for it to restart but when it did start i had loads of smoke for a few seconds so much so i could not see rear end..and also got a diesel knock on start up sometimes naw..but once i start it if i leave it idle she will idle all day but once i put load on her she will cut out.....does any one think i may have a faulty pump or crapy fuel.....any advice welcome...dont want to use my sledge but getting close to it....help...

check king injector? Unscrew when running and see if knocking stops..main fuel pump in engine? Mine had all of your symtoms but turned out to be oil getting into ecu, even after lnjector harness had been replaced.. Old oil i guess left over from previous harness, cleaned with loads and loads of brake cleaner and now all good.

oops, your right thinking of my p38 dse, only one injector has wire coming off it. Are they colour coded on a td5? Obviouslly you wont be able to crack of injector as under rocker cover, sorry for crap advice re injector!!

Your disco sounds like it is over fuelling which is why it's so hard to start when it stalls. Are you sure the fuel pressure regulator is working ? They are well known for leaking but barring that it might not be functioning properly internally giving you the over fuelling symptoms.

Just out of curiosity what makes you say it is overfuelling?

I see no reference to any black smoke?

im not sure if its over fueling or starving of fuel but when i do finaly get it to start iv got loads of white smoke for a few seconds and naw and again getting a diesel knock.any thoughts welcome before i strip everything to do with fuel..

define 'loads of white smoke'? Do you mean James Bond style smokescreen? What does the smoke smell of? It could be oil, fuel or water.

so much so when she just starts you cant see behind..and smells rich,,fuel,,but then clear,s..and will idle ok but as soon as you start driving and put any strain on it or hit any sort of up hill she will start to splutter then i lose all power and she just cuts out ratty...thanks for your comments..

well just to up date this..im not any closer to sorting my td5 out.iv drained tank incase i had crap in the fuel.checked filtter housing again.even pulled my injectors out again.no codes found still, and still loads of white smoke and cutting out.its naw at the point where i have had to take it off the road untill i find the problem..thanks to all who have made coments..

My money is still on a faulty pressure regulator.

Erm, I don't have a landy yet, but, erm had a pajero a while ago and that had similar problem. It turned out to be diesel pump seal had gone and was letting air in to the system and got the same distance every morning before the whole thig came to a stop (usually going round a corner!) and then it was difficult to start and gave out a load of smoke when it did. I'm not saying its this thats wrong with the landy, its just my own experience for what its worth, probably nothing! :)

It might be worth you pulling a turbo hose off and checking that the hoses aren't full of oil.

Sounds like its pulling in air?
Never had a disco but had simular issues with a OLD SERIES.

Does disco have a lift pump? if so it could be pulling in air their?

Good luck
